Kansas City Monarchs News Release
GARY, Ind. - Greg Jacobs blasted two home runs for the Kansas City T-Bones (13-17) tonight, but it wasn't enough as the Gary SouthShore RailCats (16-17) took the series finale, 5-4, at the U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, Indiana.
Gary took their first lead in the second inning when Steve Haake led off the frame with a triple against Chris Rhoads and scored on a sacrifice fly from Jordan Czarniecki. Jacobs tied the contest with his first home run, a solo shot off Onan Masaoka to begin the fourth. The right fielder gave Kansas City a two-run lead with his second blast, a two-run home run in the fifth.
Masaoka left after five having allowed three runs on four hits in a no-decision.
The RailCats tied the game with two one-out runs in the bottom of the fifth, the first coming when Mark Minicozzi misplayed a bases-loaded groundball from Jay Pecci, allowing the runner at third to score. Weston Curles relieved Rhoads following the play and walked Steve Haake to force in the second run. The inning ended when the next batter, Czarniecki, flied out to left and left fielder Ryan Fox threw out Eric McNamee, who tried to score on the play.
Rhoads allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits over four and one-thirds innings. He would not factor into the decision.
Cody McAllister entered in the sixth for Kansas City and surrendered a leadoff double to Cristian Guerrero. After advancing to third on a groundout to second, Guerrero scored on a wild pitch to give Gary a 4-3 advantage.
Eric Scriven doubled off Kyle Heyne (1-0) to begin the top of the seventh for the T-Bones and scored their final run on an RBI single by Jacobs. Payton Tweddale (0-3) relieved McAllister in the bottom of the seventh and surrendered two straight singles to begin the inning. After Haake grounded into a fielder's choice that saw the lead runner thrown out at home by Damian Rolls, Daniel Sattler entered for Kansas City. The first batter, Czarniecki, hit a groundball to third but Brad Correll misplayed it which allowed the deciding run to score.
Tweddale suffered the loss after allowing one unearned run on two hits in one-third of an inning.
Todd Moser threw a scoreless eighth to finish the game for the T-Bones. Heyne earned the victory after allowing one run on two hits over two innings of relief. Edwin Walker allowed just one hit over the final two innings for Gary to earn his third save of the season.
Kansas City returns home tomorrow for a seven-game homestand beginning with a three-game weekend set against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Luis Villarreal (1-1, 1.95) is set to start game one for the T-Bones against Garry Bakker (1-2, 3.47) and Fargo. First pitch is set for 7:05. Great seats are still available and start at just $6.
