
JackHammers Split Doubleheader with Schaumburg

JOLIET-The Joliet JackHammers (11-19) came back for a dramatic 6-5 win in 12 innings in game one of a doubleheader with the Schaumburg Flyers (16-13) before losing 6-5 in the nightcap at Silver Cross Field on Wednesday evening.
The JackHammers scored an early run in the 1st inning against Schaumburg RHP Dustin Glant in game one. 2B Gary Harris (2-5) led off the inning with a double. SS Kevin Rios (1-6) reached base on an error by Schaumburg 3B Vince Harrison. C Phil Avlas (0-4) laid down a perfect bunt up the third base line. The Flyers had little choice but to throw out Avlas at first base. The play allowed Harris to advance to third base with just one out in the inning.
In the 2nd inning, Schaumburg scored a run against Joliet RHP Jason Richardson. RF Victor Ferrante (1-6) led off the inning with a single and stole second base. 1B Jason Colson (2-4) hit an RBI single to score Ferrante and tie the game at 1-1.
The Flyers erupted for three runs innings in the 3rd inning. C Richard Mercado (1-6) led off the inning with a single and went to third base on a single by 2B Jose Valdez (3-6).
3B Vince Harrison (1-4) lifted a sacrifice fly to center field. Mercado scored for a 2-1 Schaumburg lead.
DH Felix Jose (1-6) hit a two-run home run over the right field to make it 4-1 Schaumburg.
The JackHammers scored three runs in the 7th inning to tie the game at 4-4.Thon led off the inning with a double and stayed put when DH Tydus Meadows (0-5) reached on an error. 3B Andrew Pinckney (1-4) hit an RBI double to plate Thon.
CF Adam Klein (2-3) hit a two-run single to score Meadows and Pinckney and tie the game at 4-4.
After the two teams traded runs in the 11th inning, the JackHammers went to work in the 12th inning. RF Wally Backman, Jr. (3-5) led off the inning with a single and moved to second base on a single by LF Jamie McGraw (1-5). CF Adam Klein (2-3) laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt that moved both runners to scoring position. The Flyers intentionally walked Harris to load the bases for SS Kevin Rios (1-6), who hit a single to win the game for the JackHammers.
In game two, the JackHammers scored a single run in the 1st inning against Schaumburg LHP Carmen Pigantiello (3-1). CF Adam Klein (1-1) led off the inning with a walk and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt executed by SS Danny Cox (0-3). DH Phil Avlas (2-4) hit a single to move Klein to third. He scored when 1B Freddie Thon (0-3) hit into a fielder's choice to give the JackHammers a 1-0 lead.
The Flyers scored two runs in the 3rd inning against JackHammers RHP Aaron Trolia. He lasted four innings and allowed two runs on six hits. RHP Rory Shortell (2-1) pitched two innings in relief and suffered the loss for Joliet.
3B Andrew Pinckney (1-3) hit a two-run home run in the 4th inning and RF Jamie McGraw (1-3) added a solo home run in the 7th. The JackHammers strung together two runs in the 7th inning to get within one run at 6-5 before RHP Jim Popp recorded his first save.
Loose Gravel: Game one feature great defensive play. RF Wally Backman, Jr. leaped over the RF wall to take a home run away from Schaumburg LF Jason Colson in the 10th inning.
Loose Gravel: The JackHammers game one win also meant their fans won big too! JackHammers pitching struck out the bowling batters for both games of the doubleheader. That means everyone at the ballpark can go bowling courtesy of Will County Bowling Proprietors. JackHammers pitching also amassed 11 strikeouts in game one. That means everyone in the ballpark turn in their ticket stub to get a free baby blossom appetizer at any one of the three Texas Roadhouse locations: Joliet, Tinley Park and Naperville.
The JackHammers and Flyers finish their series at Silver Cross Field on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. The JackHammers will host Thirst Quenching Thursdays with 1.50 Budweiser products on top of the Louie's Pad Rooftop. Schaumburg has not announced its starter and Joliet will send LHP Brad Mumma (3-2, 3.55) to the mound.
