Schaumburg Flyers News Release

JOLIET - The Flyers were clicking on all cylinders Thursday night at Silver Cross Field, drawing eight walks and knocking ten hits en route to a 9-5 win over Joliet to secure a series victory. The nine runs are the most in a game for the Flyers since June 3rd.

After retiring the first five Flyers hitters, JackHammers starter Jason Novak issued back-to-back two out walks to Jason Colson and Victor Ferrante and hit Richard Mercado to load the bases. The Flyers then stringed together three consecutive hits - singles from Travis Brown and Travis Ezi, and a double by Jeff Dunbar - to plate four two-out runs. The third out was recorded when Ezi was gunned at the plate on Dunbar's double.

In the fourth, Ferrante led off with a single. That would be the only hit of the inning, but the Flyers still pushed across three in the frame behind a remarkable five walks. Dunbar picked up his second RBI of the night with a sac fly, and Felix Jose and Vince Harrison each drew bases loaded walks to make it 7-0 Flyers. All three of the runs in the inning again came with two away.

The three-run fourth was sandwiched between a third inning solo shot from Jose Valdez -his first of the season - and a sixth inning solo homer off the bat of Felix Jose to give Schaumburg a 9-1 lead.

Entering the ninth trailing 9-3, Joliet would make things interesting against Tom Lyons. Isaac Omura knocked in two runs with a double, Freddie Thon singled, and Tydus Meadows walked to load the bases, bringing Andrew Pinckney to the plate as the tying run. But Lyons would get Pinckney to ground out to second on the first pitch to end the game.

The Hammers actually topped the Flyers hit total, 13-10, but it was the Flyers eight walks that proved to be the difference in the game.

Alain Quijano (1-0) was spectacular for the Flyers, scattering six hits over six innings and picking up his first win in his first start. Novak falls to 0-1 in his first start of the season.

Schaumburg returns home for a nine-game stand at Alexian Field, beginning with a 6:45 game against Gary on Fireworks Friday. RHP Ed Almonte will toe the rubber for the Flyers, who have won two straight.
