JOLIET, IL-The Schaumburg Flyers (17-13) scored eight runs over the first four innings to take an 8-0 lead en route to a 9-5 win over the Joliet JackHammers (11-20) before 2,338 fans at Silver Cross Field on Thursday night.
The Flyers struck first on Thursday with a four-spot in the 2nd inning against JackHammers RHP Jason Novak (0-1). DH Felix Jose (1-3) led off the inning by popping out and 3B Vince Harrison (1-4) few out to center field. 1B Jason Colson (0-4) worked a walk and stole second base. RF Victor Ferrante (3-4) also walked and C Richard Mercado (1-4) was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
SS Travis Brown (1-3) smacked a two-run single to score to score Ferrante and Colson and make it 2-0. CF Travis Ezi (1-4) hit an RBI single to score Mercado and push the lead to 3-0.
LF Jeff Dunbar (1-4) drove in the other run with an RBI single to bring home Brown for a 4-0 score.
The Flyers tacked on a run in the 3rd inning on a solo home run from 2B Jose Valdez (1-4) and three more runs in the 4th inning.
Novak went four innings and allowed eight runs on five hits.
The JackHammers started their scoring in the 5th inning against Schaumburg LHP Alain Quijano. DH Andrew Pinckney (2-4) hit a single and moved to second base on a single by 3B Wally Backman, Jr. (1-4) RF Jamie McGraw (0-4) hit into a fielder's choice that retired Pinckney at third base. CF Adam Klein (2-4) followed with a single to load the bases.
2B Gary Harris (1-4) lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Backman, Jr and get the JackHammers on the board at 8-1.
Schaumburg DH Felix Jose (1-3) hit a solo home run in the 6th inning to increase the lead to 9-1.
Joliet slowly came back with single runs in the 6th and 8th innings. Pinckney smacked an RBI double to score Thon all the way from 1st base and bring the JackHammers within seven runs at 9-2. In the 8th inning, Isaac Omura (2-2) pinch-hit for C Phil Avlas (1-3) and hit a double. He went to third on a single by Thon and scored when DH Tydus Meadows (0-4) hit into a double play.
The JackHammers strung together four consecutive hits in the 9th inning to get within four runs at 9-5 before Flyers RHP Tom Lyons induced a ground ball to Pinckney to end the ballgame.
Joliet begins a 10-game road trip tomorrow night in Winnipeg with the first of four games against the Winnipeg Goldeyes. LHP Brad Mumma (3-2, 3.55) gets the start for the JackHammers against RHP Bear Bay (4-1, 3.73) for the Goldeyes.
