HOMERS PUSH BISCUITS BY SHRIMP

Stone Garrett homered, but two Kevin Padlo shots helped power the Montgomery Biscuits to a 3-2 win over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. Padlo's first home run came in the second inning to give Montgomery a 1-0 lead. Garrett then went opposite field to bop a two-run shot, placing the Jumbo Shrimp ahead at 2-1. In the fourth, Padlo smashed another dinger to equalized the tally at two. The score remained tied until the ninth inning, when Jermaine Palacios socked a solo long ball to lift the Biscuits to a 3-2 advantage. With two outs and a man on first in the bottom of the ninth, Garrett flew out to the wall in center field to end the ballgame.

CLOSE, BUT NO CIGAR

Throughout every level in the history of baseball, nearly every team can expect to go about .500 in games decided by one or two runs. However, the Jumbo Shrimp have gone a combined 8-24 (.250) in games determined by two runs or fewer, including a stunning 0-11 in contests decided by precisely two tallies. In fact, Jacksonville has lost six of their last seven affairs decided by no more than two runs. Not helping matters is the club has also not performed well in "blowout games," which are decided by at least five runs. The Jumbo Shrimp are just 2-11 in those blowout situations.

MEN OF STEAL

Jumbo Shrimp catchers have been a crucial element to a strong defense throughout the 2019 season. The club's backstops have caught 35 men stealing, the second-highest total in Double-A and tied for the fifth-best mark in all of Minor League Baseball. Jacksonville's 43.2 percent caught stealing rate ranks fourth in Double-A.

WE DIDN'T START THE FIRE

In the first 20 games of the season, Jacksonville starting pitchers compiled a 3-13 record and 5.44 ERA over 91.0 innings. Jumbo Shrimp lid-lifters combined for 49 walks (4.8 BB/9), 89 strikeouts (8.8 K/9) and 91 hits allowed (9.0 H/9). However, the Jumbo Shrimp have seen some stellar starting pitching over the last 41 games. During this stretch, Jacksonville starters have combined for a 2.81 ERA (74 ER in 237.0 IP). Jumbo Shrimp starters have walked 68 (2.6 BB/9), fanned 199 (7.6 K/9) and yielded 195 hits (7.4 H/9).

FIVE FOR FIGHTING

Jacksonville reeled off seven wins in 10 games from May 23 through June 2, the club's best 10-game stretch of the season. However, the Jumbo Shrimp have followed that run up with five consecutive losses. During that successful 10-game stretch, Jacksonville's pitching staff yielded just 35 runs (3.5 per game) courtesy of a 3.16 ERA, the third-best in the Southern League. The Jumbo Shrimp totaled 84 strikeouts (8.3 K/9) against 26 walks (2.6 BB/9) and 74 hits allowed (7.3 H/9) in 91.0 innings. In comparison, during the club's five-game losing streak, Jacksonville has surrendered a league-worst 31 runs allowed (6.2 runs per game) and 6.63 ERA. The Jumbo Shrimp pitching staff has totaled 49 strikeouts (11.6 K/9), 14 walks (3.3 BB/9) and 46 hits (10.9 H/9) allowed in 38.0 frames.

THE SORCERER'S STONE

Jacksonville outfielder Stone Garrett mustered just one hit in 17 at-bats (.059 average) in six games from May 15 through May 22. After a day off on May 23, the Richmond, Texas native laced a double and a triple on May 24 in Mississippi, catapulting himself on a hot streak at the plate. Including that contest against the Braves, Garrett is slashing .264/.291/.566 with a double, three triples, three home runs, 14 RBIs and nine runs scored in his last 14 games. Of the 104 Southern League hitters with at least 100 plate appearances this season, Garrett owns the circuit's sixth-highest line drive rate (26.9 percent). However, the 23-year-old has also posted the league's third-highest swinging-strike rate (23.0 percent).

THE MILLER'S TALE

Jacksonville outfielder Brian Miller saw his 16-game hitting streak, the best run in all of Double-A this season, come to an end in Thursday's doubleheader in Pensacola. Still, the Raleigh, N.C., native has reached base at least once in 18 of the last 19 games, going 27-for-75 (.360/.415/.440) with four doubles, one triple, nine RBIs and seven walks during this span. On the season, Miller ranks in a tie for fifth in the Southern League with 59 hits. The former North Carolina Tar Heel is pulling the ball at a career-high 48.3 percent clip while going the opposite way a career-low 20.1 percent of the time, the fourth-lowest such mark of the 123 Southern League hitters with at least 70 plate appearances this year.
