POTEET DOMINATES, BUT JACKSONVILLE FALLS 3-1
Cody Poteet fired eight innings of one-run ball on Sunday, but a ninth-inning Kevin Padlo home run lifted the Montgomery Biscuits to a 3-1 victory over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. In the fourth inning, Miles Mastrobuoni doubled before scoring on a wild pitch for the game's first run. Jacksonville trailed 1-0 until the eighth, when B.J. Lopez scored on a Biscuits error. In the ninth, Padlo blasted a two-run shot to put Montgomery ahead 3-1. Poteet needed just 84 pitches to get through his eight frames. He ceded just one run on three hits while striking out four against two walks. Biscuits starter Sam McWilliams hurled seven scoreless innings of his own in the effort.
HOW I MET YOUR DUGGER
Heading into play on April 22, Jumbo Shrimp starter Robert Dugger was saddled with a 6.60 ERA. In the eight starts since then, the Tomball, Texas native has seen that mark plummet to 3.02. During this eight-outing stretch, Dugger has ceded just 13 runs, all earned, on 38 hits in 50.2 innings for a 2.31 ERA. The 23-year-old right-hander has whiffed 52 against only 10 walks. On the season, Dugger, who earned Southern League Pitcher of the Week for May 13-19 and was named a Southern League Midseason All-Star, has posted a 46.1 percent ground ball rate. Last season with Jacksonville, the former Texas Tech Red Raider registered a 34.4 percent ground ball percentage. Additionally, among the 60 Southern League pitchers who have logged 30.0 innings this year, Dugger ranks 14th in K-BB% (18.2 percent) and 17th in xFIP (3.28).
THE MILLER'S TALE
Jacksonville outfielder Brian Miller saw his 16-game hitting streak, the best run in all of Double-A this season, come to an end in Thursday's doubleheader in Pensacola. Still, the Raleigh, N.C., native has reached base at least once in 20 of the last 21 games, going 29-for-80 (.363/.420/.438) with four doubles, one triple, nine RBIs and eight walks during this span. On the season, Miller ranks in a tie for fifth in the Southern League with 61 hits. The former North Carolina Tar Heel is pulling the ball at a career-high 47.5 percent clip while going the opposite way a career-low 20.4 percent of the time, the fourth-lowest such mark of the 125 Southern League hitters with at least 70 plate appearances this year.
TWO PEAS IN A POD
Jacksonville infielder J.C. Millan went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and three RBIs on Saturday, becoming the first Jumbo Shrimp player to register three extra-base hits in a game all season. In the same contest, Santiago Chavez blasted a three-run home run, marking the first time all season Jacksonville crushed multiple long balls in one game. Millan, in particular, has been on a tear of late. Over his last 11 contests, the 23-year-old is a sizzling 15-for-39 with four doubles, one long ball, 10 RBIs and six walks for a .385/.467/.564 batting line. During these 11 games, Millan has seen his wRC+ rocket up from 25 to 94.
CLOSE, BUT NO CIGAR
Throughout every level in the history of baseball, nearly every team can expect to go about .500 in games decided by one or two runs. However, the Jumbo Shrimp have gone a combined 8-25 (.242) in games determined by two runs or fewer, including a stunning 0-12 in contests decided by precisely two tallies. In fact, Jacksonville has lost seven of their last eight affairs decided by no more than two runs. Not helping matters is the club has also not performed well in "blowout games," which are decided by at least five runs. The Jumbo Shrimp are just 3-11 in those blowout situations.
MEN OF STEAL
Jumbo Shrimp catchers have been a crucial element to a strong defense throughout the 2019 season. The club's backstops have caught 37 men stealing, tied for the second-highest such mark in all of Minor League Baseball. Jacksonville's 44.6 percent caught stealing rate ranks fourth in Double-A. Individually, Santiago Chavez is fifth in the minors with 22 runners caught stealing in just 38 attempts.
IT'S NOT HOW YOU START
In the first 20 games of the season, Jacksonville starting pitchers compiled a 3-13 record and 5.44 ERA over 91.0 innings. Jumbo Shrimp lid-lifters combined for 49 walks (4.8 BB/9), 89 strikeouts (8.8 K/9) and 91 hits allowed (9.0 H/9). However, the Jumbo Shrimp have seen some stellar starting pitching over the last 43 games. During this stretch, Jacksonville starters have combined for a 2.76 ERA (77 ER in 250.2 IP). Jumbo Shrimp starters have walked 73 (2.6 BB/9), fanned 206 (7.4 K/9) and yielded 202 hits (7.3 H/9).
