Carolina Mudcats News Release

Jacksonville, FL --- Brandon Tripp doubled home two runs during a decisive seventh inning to lead Jacksonville past Carolina 6-0 in the series opener at the Baseball Grounds before 7,037 fans on Saturday night.

The Mudcats (6-10) trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh before the Suns (9-6) scored four two-out runs. Tripp drilled a two-run double to right-centerfield, then scored on a triple by Matt Dominguez. Reliever Jordan Smith then surrendered a single to Tim Torres to bring in the fourth run of the inning as the Suns went ahead 6-0.

Carolina's sixth straight loss overshadowed a strong outing by starter Matt Klinker, who worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one earned run while striking out eight. Klinker (L, 1-2) allowed a two-out hit to Torres in the fourth to bring home Jacksonville's first run, but then an unearned run scored in the sixth on a throwing error by third baseman Jake Kahaulelio.

Jacksonville starter Elih Villanueva (W, 1-1) pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings en route to his first win of the season. Villanueva struck out seven batters and walked two.

The Mudcats and Suns each stranded 11 runners during the game, with Carolina leaving the bases loaded in both the seventh and ninth innings.

Michael Griffin had three of the nine Mudcats hits.

The series continues Sunday afternoon at 3:05 PM ET with Dallas Buck starting for Carolina.
