MOBILE, Ala, - Three consecutive home runs in the top of the fifth erased a BayBears lead and lifted the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx to a 6-2 victory over the BayBears on Saturday night in front of 4,135 fans at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Wes Roemer (1-1), who had put together nothing but quality starts through his first three outings, surrendered a run in the first as Dustin Ackley started a two-out rally with a walk. After Mike Wilson singled, Ackley scored on a knock up the middle by catcher Guillermo Quiroz.
Dan Cortes (1-1) was tough on the hill for West Tenn (7-9) as he only gave up one hit in five frames. He walked himself into a jam in the bottom of the fourth when he choked up free passes to Collin Cowgill, Bryan Byrne and Pete Clifford. Ed Easley capitalized on behalf of the BayBears (7-9) with a double over short to score Cowgill and Byrne.
With the BayBears up 2-1, Roemer stormed back to the bump in the fifth with the lead for the first time, but he wouldn't hold it. Carlos Triunfel quickly tied the game with a solo shot to left-center. Kuo Hui Lo lofted a high fly to left that snuck over fence which gave the Jaxx a 3-2 lead. The next hitter, Carlos Peguero, also took advantage of a gusty wind to left as he cracked his sixth tater of the year.
West Tenn added two more in the eighth against Kyler Newby with consecutive doubles by Quiroz and Johan Limonta plating a run. Limonta scored on a base hit by Alex Liddi.
The BayBears' offense was stifled early and couldn't get the big hit late. They left 10 men on base including eight in the final four frames.
The BayBears continue a 10-game homestand with the second of their five contests against the Diamond Jaxx at 6:05 p.m. on Sunday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
