Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Generals (31-42, 2-3) used three home runs to take a 4-0 win over the Barons (36-38, 3-2) before leaving Regions Field for West Tennessee. Despite the shutout, Birmingham came out the victor of the series, taking the first five-game set of the second half 3-2.
The Generals lifted two homers off starter Tony Bucciferro (0-5, 6.80 ERA), who was charged with the loss, and one off reliever Sean Hagan. All three blasts were solo shots, as the Barons pitching staff allowed just four earned runs on the evening.
The Barons were held to just five hits between four Generals pitchers. Anthony Fernandez started the game but received no decision. James Gillheeney (4-2, 3.05 ERA), Saturday's projected starter, made an appearance from the pen and claimed the win in 4.0 innings of work. Trey Cochran-Gill earned the save as he was brought on with two outs in the ninth.
Birmingham went to the seventh trailing 3-0 courtesy of the Jackson long ball. Montevallo product Devon Davis tossed an inning of no-hit relief, and newly-added righty Tim Crabbe threw the eighth and ninth innings. Despite allowing just two hits in two innings of work, the Generals were able to plate a run against Crabbe.
Down 4-0 headed to the bottom of the ninth inning, the Barons made one last push to put runs on the board. Joey DeMichele led off with a walk and Courtney Hawkins lined a single to left to board two, but three consecutive outs following Hawkins' at bat ended Birmingham's hopes of a fourth win in the series.
