Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, AL - The Mobile BayBears split their doubleheader with the Tennessee Smokies Sunday evening at Hank Aaron Stadium. Tennessee edged Mobile 5-4 in game one but the BayBears bounced back with a 7-3 win in the back end of the double-dip. The win in game two snapped an eighth game home losing streak by the BayBears who now sit at 1-3 in the second half of the season and 35-38 overall.
In the first game, the Smokies bats jumped out to the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Albert Almora Jr. got things going with a one-out double to left and Dan Vogelbach followed with a walk. Willson Contreras drove in Almora Jr. from second with a RBI base knock to right to make it 1-0.
With two outs, Stephen Bruno hit a line drive base-hit to left, scoring Vogelbach from third to extend the lead to 2-0.
The BayBears came back in the bottom of the first. Sean Jamieson and Jack Reinheimer drew back-to-back walks, then Zach Borenstein drove out a three-run home run to put the BayBears up, 3-2.
The Smokies then tied the game in the top of the fourth when Billy McKinney doubled then later tagged up and scored from third after Elliot Soto then came through with the game-tying single.
Tennessee took a 5-3 lead when with the bases loaded, BayBears LHP Will Locante walked both Almora Jr. and Vogelbach to give Tennessee a 5-3 advantage. The Smokies would surrendered one more BayBear run but ultimately hold on for the 5-4 win.
In game two, Mobile scored early and often taking a 7-0 lead. Sean Jamieson started the bottom of the first with a double down the right field line and moved to third on a single to center by Socrates Brito. Jack Reinheimer followed with a RBI single to right to score Jamieson and put the BayBears in front, 1-0. Mobile added three more runs in the first inning to go up 4-0 before tacking on three more runs in the second fame.
Tennessee would pull to within four runs, but BayBears' starter RHP Braden Shipley and the BayBears bullpen held off the Smokies bats to preserve the 7-3 victory. Shipley picked up his fourth win of the season, allowing just three runs on five hits, walking one and striking out five in five innings.
Mobile and Tennessee concluded their series Monday night at Hank Aaron Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM central time. RHP John Omahen will toe the rubber for the BayBears in his first Double-A start while RHP Ryan Williams (3-0, 2.53 ERA) will take the mound for the Smokies.
