Jackson Generals News Release

Birmingham, Ala. - The Seattle Mariners announced a roster move that affected the Jackson Generals prior to the team's series finale at Regions Field against the Birmingham Barons on Monday morning. Left-handed pitcher Anthony Fernandez joins the Generals, while southpaw Jake Zokan was placed on the seven-day disabled list.

Fernandez is working his way back from Tommy John surgery on his left elbow last May. He is coming off of a rehab start with the AZL Mariners on Wednesday, June 24. Fernandez gave up one run on five hits over four innings in Peoria.

The lefty made five starts last year with Triple-A Tacoma, going 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA for the Rainiers. His last affiliated start before Wednesday came on April 28. Dr. James Andrews performed surgery on a UCL rupture in his left elbow May 22.

The Dominican hurler pitched for Jackson in the Second Half of 2012 and all of 2013. In 2012, he became the first pitcher in franchise history to toss back-to-back nine-inning complete games in his first two starts after doing so June 23 versus Huntsville and June 28 at Pensacola. He was added to Seattle's 40-man roster in November of that season, but the Mariners designated him for assignment and optioned him to Triple-A this past January.

Fernandez was signed by the Mariners as non-drafted free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2006 at the age of 16.

To make room for Fernandez on the roster, Jake Zokan was placed on the disabled list for the first time this season. Zokan began the year in Bakersfield, going 1-1 with a 1.69 ERA in three starts for the Blaze before earning a promotion to Jackson.

In 11 starts with the Generals, Zokan is 2-4 with a 4.61 ERA. He became the second Jackson starter to earn a victory this season on May 4 against Pensacola. From June 3 to June 14, he had a stretch of three-straight starts where he went at least six innings.

Jackson's roster currently stands at 25 active players with eight on the disabled list. Ferndandez will wear No. 27 for the Generals. An updated roster is attached.

Fernandez is expected to start for Jackson Monday in Birmingham. First pitch is slated for 11:30 am CT, and you can listen to all the action on the TJ Network (AM 1390, FM 94.1 and 94.3) starting with the Jackson Generals Pregame Show protected by the Tennessee Army National Guard at 11:15 am CT.

The Generals return home against Mobile Wednesday, July 1 for a three-game set headlined by an Independence Day celebration with postgame Fireworks July 3! The team will be wearing special patriotic jerseys for the contest that will be auctioned off after the contest with proceeds going to the 30th SAB Association. Thursday is a State Farm Agent Wes Harris Dollar Night as well! Tickets are still available by calling the team at (731) 988.5299, stopping by the park or going online to jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
