Jackson Becomes Eleventh Chiefs Player to be Promoted in \'08

PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs have announced that 2008 ninth-round pick RH Jay Jackson has been promoted to High-A Daytona in the Florida State League. The Cubs 2008 26th round draft selection RH Josh Whitlock has been promoted from Boise to take Jackson's spot on the Chiefs roster. Whitlock is expected to join the Chiefs in time for Sunday's 2:00 PM game with the South Bend Silver Hawks.

Jackson, a ninth round pick in this June's draft out of Furman University, joined the Chiefs on July 3 after beginning the season with Boise. In six appearances, including one start with Peoria, Jackson posted a 2-2 record with a 3.00 ERA. In 24 innings with the Chiefs, the right-hander struck out 37 batters, including a season-high eight on July 16 against Lansing. In his last four appearances, the 20-year old registered 29 strikeouts. His last appearance with the Chiefs came on August 1 when he took the loss against South Bend. In 4 2/3 innings he struck out seven batters and allowed three runs on three hits. Prior to joining the Chiefs, Jackson appeared three times with Boise without a decision. In nine innings he allowed seven hits and struck out 14 while issuing just one walk in the Northwest League.

Whitlock, who was selected by the Cubs in the 26th round out of West Virginia University in June, joins the Chiefs from Boise. Whitlock made nine NWL appearances, five of which were starts, while going 0-1 with a 4.31 ERA. In 31 1/3 innings, the right-hander struck out 31 batters while walking 14. He allowed 28 hits this season while the opposition hit .246 against him. While at West Virginia last season, he started 14 games and rendered a decision in each appearance, including tossing two complete games. Whitlock's last Boise appearance came on Tuesday as he tossed three shutout innings at Salem-Keizer. He was an overall 7-7 with a 5.96 ERA in his final season with the Mountaineers. He also struck out 70 and walked 47 while working 93 1/3 innings. His 14 starts tied him for the team lead for West Virginia.

The Chiefs are currently on a 10-game homestand that continues Sunday afternoon at 2:00. Sunday is Taco Bell Family Day at O'Brien Field. Fans can pick up a voucher at participating central Illinois Taco Bell restaurants, and upon redeeming it at the box office, you will receive four club box seats, a disposable camera and a picture frame all for just $48. Following the game, kids 14 and under can run the bases, and all fans will have the chance to get autographs from Chiefs players on the concourse. Also on Sunday, fans who have tickets from the Chiefs game at Wrigley Field on July 29 can exchange their ticket for a free lawn seat. Fans wishing to upgrade can do so based on availability. An upgrade to a Club Box seat will be $4 per ticket while an upgrade to a Box Seat will cost $3. The first 1,000 kids 12 and under on Sunday will receive a Peoria Chiefs lunch box courtesy of Prairie Home Alliance. Chiefs players will also sign autographs after the game.
