Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Quad Cities River Bandits entered play hungry for a series sweep on Sunday, only to watch the Dayton Dragons sneak out of town with a 1-0 win at Modern Woodmen Park.
Quad Cities (24-19, 57-50) still managed to take two of three in the set to complete the homestand at 4-2, winning their fourth consecutive series in the process. Dayton (25-18, 53-58) got a fantastic pitching performance from reliever Juan Rafael, while Justin Reed provided the game's lone RBI as well as a dramatic game-saving catch in the bottom of the ninth.
The only run of the evening crossed the plate in the top of the fifth. Keltavious Jones flipped a single to center to start the Dragons' rally and moved from first to third on a single up the middle by Brandon Menchaca. Jones scored on a liner to right by Reed, putting Dayton ahead by a 1-0 score.
Meanwhile, three Dragons' hurlers combined on a seven-hit shutout. Kyle Lotzkar got it started with 2.2 frames but was removed from the game in the third inning due to an apparent right arm injury. Rafael (3-1) picked up where Lotzkar left off, striking out seven over 5.1 dominant innings to collect the win. He allowed four hits and walked two without yielding a run.
Henry Arias (3) became the third Dragon's reliever in the ninth inning, picking up the save despite nearly allowing a comeback rally. There were two away when he issued a walk to Ross Oeder and allowed a single to D'Marcus Ingram, putting the potential game-tying and go-ahead runs on base. Nick Peoples followed by clubbing a deep fly to right-center, but Reed came racing across the outfield and made a spectacular game-saving catch to end the ballgame.
Fick (3-4) suffered the tough-luck loss for a second consecutive outing after setting career-highs with six strikeouts and 7.1 innings last Monday at Great Lakes. The 22-year-old right-hander turned in another impressive performance on Sunday, tossing seven strong innings and establishing a new career high with eight strikeouts. He allowed just one run while scattering seven hits and not issuing a walk, inducing a pair of double play balls along the way. Over his last two outings, Fick is 0-2 despite a 2.51 ERA, 14 strikeouts, and no walks over 14.1 innings of work.
UP NEXT: The River Bandits will take the day off on Monday before starting a four-game series in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday. Quad Cities returns to Modern Woodmen Park on Saturday, August 9, to host the Clinton LumberKings for a four-game set. Bandit Wear featuring the new team name and logo is currently available by visiting the Modern Woodmen Park team store, and prorated versions of season ticket packages, mini-packages, and the popular You-Pick-10 Plan are on sale at the park or by calling (563) 3-BANDITS!
