Dayton Dragons News Release

Davenport, Iowa-Three Dayton Dragons pitchers combined on a seven-hit shutout and Justin Reed drove in the game's only run as the Dragons defeated the Quad Cities River Bandits 1-0 on Sunday. With the win, the Dragons increased their lead on the Fort Wayne Wizards to five games with 27 to play in the Eastern Division wildcard race in the Midwest League.

Dragons reliever Juan Rafael provided his third straight sparkling long relief outing to earn the win. Rafael went five and one-third innings, allowing four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Since joining the Dragons from the Gulf Coast League Reds, Rafael has pitched in three games and earned the win in all of them, tossing 15 innings while allowing just two runs.

The Dragons scored the only run of the game in the fifth inning. With one out, Keltavious Jones singled to center and Brandon Menchaca followed with a single up the middle to move Jones to third while Menchaca took second base on the throw. Reed lined a single to right to drive in Jones and make it 1-0 as Menchaca went to third. Reed was thrown out trying to steal second and Jake Kahaulelio struck out to end the inning as the Dragons settled for one run, which would stand up the rest of the night.

The River Bandits had runners in scoring position against Rafael in four consecutive innings from the fourth through the seventh but could not score.

Henry Arias replace Rafael in the bottom of the ninth. He retired the first two batters but then issued a walk to Ross Oeder and allowed a single to right to D'Marcus Ingram to move the tying run to second. Nick Peoples then lined a deep drive to right-center that Reed caught with a lunging, tumbling grab to preserve the lead and end the game.

The Dragons are 25-18 in the second half. They went 3-3 on their six game road trip.

The Dragons do not play on Monday. They open an important four game series with Fort Wayne at Fifth Third Field on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Jeremy Horst (6-2, 2.74) will start for Dayton.
