
Jackie Joyner-Kersee Honored as Woman of Inspiration at Mercury Game on Saturday

WHAT: The Phoenix Mercury will honor six-time Olympic medal winner and heptathlon world record holder Jackie Joyner-Kersee as the Mercury's 2009 Woman of Inspiration during the Sept. 5 game vs. the Atlanta Dream. The night will be dedicated to recognizing local women who inspire others through commitment and dedication to work, family and community.
Joyner-Kersee is ranked among the all-time greatest athletes in the women's heptathlon as well as in the women's long jump. She won three gold, one silver and two bronze Olympic medals from 1984 to 1992. She was also voted the greatest female athlete of the 20th century by Sports Illustrated for Women and named one of the 50 greatest athletes by ESPN.
In 2000, Joyner-Kersee opened the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Center in East St. Louis, Ill. to provide a safe haven for young people to learn, play and give back to the community. The Center offers a variety of educational and recreational activities for youth and adults including; after-school tutoring, youth sports leagues, nutrition and health education, fitness and meals for seniors, as well as other important community related programs.
She joins the ranks of fellow Mercury inspiring women Robin Roberts (2007) and Ali Vincent, First Female Biggest Loser (2008).
