Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Augusta, GA - If Sunday's game between the Augusta GreenJackets and Hagerstown Suns was an episode of Sesame Street, it would've been sponsored by the letter K...for strikeout. Both teams combined to strike out 22 hitters as the GreenJackets notched a 2-0 win in the pitchers' duel, their third shutout win of the season.

The pitching matchup featured two first-rounders from the 2011 draft - Augusta's Kyle Crick and Hagerstown's Alex Meyer. The game was nip and tuck early on, scoreless until the fourth but for very different reasons. Crick was effectively ineffective - keeping hitters off balance in four scoreless innings of two-ball with a career-best eight strikeouts. He walked two, hit two batters and threw a wild pitch as his command lacked at times. Meyer (1-3) allowed one hit the first time through the order - a second-inning infield single - but was touched up the second time through.

After Meyer got out of a jam in the third, the GreenJackets touched him up for a pair of runs on four hits in the fourth inning. Ben Thomas singled and Jose Cuevas doubled at the start of the frame to put runners at second and third with no one out. Hagerstown got two outs quickly and it looked as though Meyer might escape yet another jam. Eric Sim hit a two-strike, two-out chopper up the middle and beat the throw from second baseman Cutter Dykstra to score Thomas and give the GreenJackets a 1-0 lead. Carlos Willoughby's opposite field flare on the very next pitch plated Cuevas to extend the lead to two runs.

Meyer threw a career-long 5.2 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits and a pair of walks while striking out eight, also a career-best.

The GreenJackets got another stellar relief effort to extinguish the Suns in the middle game of the three-game set. Derek Law (1-0) led the charge as four different relievers held the Suns scoreless on two hits over the game's final five innings. Law allowed a hit in three scoreless frames to earn his first professional win, striking out three. The bullpen was aided by the fact that the Suns went 0-12 at the plate with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 runners on base.

In the ninth, Cody Hall allowed a base hit and a walk to bring the go-ahead run to the plate before inducing a fly out to end the game, earning Hall his league-leading fifth save of the season.

Monday features the rubber match of the three-game series in the homestand finale. Paul Davis (1-0, 3.00) makes his first start of the year for the GreenJackets against Taylor Hill (3-0, 2.25). It will be another Feed Your Face Monday, as fans can enjoy unlimited amounts of select items from ballpark concession stands for the price of admission from the time gates open until the end of the sixth inning. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.

Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
