Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds (12-11) dropped a heartbreaker in the continuation of the suspended game from Saturday night, 9-8, and fell in the regularly scheduled game, 12-1, at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Trailing 8-2 in the bottom of the seventh of the suspended game, Connor Narron led off with a solo home run over the right field line.
In the eighth, the Shorebirds exploded for five runs to tie the game at 8-8. With the bases loaded, Mychal Givens walked to force in Jason Esposito. Then, Sammie Starr connected on a double to the left field wall to pull the Shorebirds within two runs. Glynn Davis followed with a grounder to short that scored Givens. Two batters later, Brenden Webb hit a ground ball through the right side of the infield to score Starr, which tied the game at 8-8.
In the ninth inning, Brian Humphries hit a liner through the alley in left-center field to score the eventual game-winning run.
In the regularly scheduled game, the Tourists jumped on starter Miguel Chalas early. In the second inning, they plated five runs and scored seven more runs in the third inning.
Shortstop Trevor Story capped the second inning with a two-run home run to left field. Jared Simon bookended the third with a two-run double.
The Shorebirds lone run came on a single by Givens in the fourth to score Esposito, who was issued a walk to open the inning.
Shorebirds reliever Matt Taylor pitched well in the second game of the day. Over 4.2 innings of relief, a season high, he allowed just two hits and no earned runs. He also struck out five batters.
Asheville shortstop Trevor Story had seven runs-batted-in during the two games on Sunday.
The Shorebirds and Tourists play the series finale on Monday night at 7:05pm. Right-hander Dylan Bundy is the scheduled starter for Delmarva.
