New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - Left-hander A.J. Wideman tossed seven shutout innings as the New Jersey Jackals defeated the Worcester Tornadoes 2-0 on Wednesday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. The win, New Jersey's seventh straight, was also manager Joe Calfapietra's 300th regular season victory at the Jackals helm. In addition, Jackals' closer Rusty Tucker notched his 100th career save.
Wideman (2-0) earned the victory, allowing three hits with three walks and one strikeout. Jackals' reliever Seth Overbey contributed a scoreless eighth inning. For the Tornadoes, southpaw Zach Zuercher (1-2) suffered the tough loss after allowing one run on four hits in seven frames with three walks and five strikeouts.
The Jackals broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning when designated hitter Juan Tejeda drew a two-out walk and scored when the next batter, catcher Matt Lauderdale, laced an RBI double to right field to give the Jackals a 1-0 lead.
That score held until the bottom of the eighth, when left fielder Ryan Rogowski led off with a double before coming platewart on a suicide squeeze by shortstop Mike DeJesus.
In the top of the ninth, Worcester third baseman Chris Colabello reached on a leadoff error and first baseman Nick Salotti later walked to place runners on first and second with one out. However, Tucker retired left fielder Carlos Sosa on a flyout before striking out designated hitter and reigning Can-Am League Hitter of the Week Mike Leonard to seal the victory and secure his sixth save of the season.
The Jackals and Tornadoes conclude their three-game series on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. at Yogi Berra Stadium when New Jersey sends right-hander Ted Serro (2-1, 4.00 ERA) to the mound against Worcester righty Ryan Mitchell (1-0, 3.10 ERA). Cody Chrusciel and Joey Whelan have the call with the live webcast beginning ten minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
