Skyhawks Pitching First in Can-Am League

The Sussex Skyhawks' pitching team is off to a strong start in the 2009 season. With a team ERA average of 3.71, the Skyhawks lead the league in pitching in the Can-Am League. The Skyhawks also have three players on the top 10 pitching list for the league. Kyle Ruwe, a member of the 2008 Skyhawks championship team, is 2nd on the top 10 pitching list, with a 2-0 record and 1.69 ERA in 27 innings pitched this season. With 16 strikeouts, Ruwe is fourth on the top ten list. Ruwe, nephew of Buck Ruwe, a member of the 1979 Chicago Bears, hails from Sunrise, Florida. Mike Schellinger is one of only two pitchers this season in the Can-Am League to pitch a complete game. Schellinger is new to the Skyhawks team this year, and has previously played with the Joliet Jackhammers and the Washington Wild Things. In 2008 with Washington, Schellinger played 21 games and had an ERA of 3.95. This year he has pitched 21 innings with an ERA of 2.14 and is third in the league of top ten pitchers. Justin Knoff, in his second season with Skyhawks, is a New Jersey native of Burlington. Knoff is 8th in the league in pitching, with a record of 2-1 and 2.88 ERA in 25 innings pitched. Knoff leads the league in strikeouts with 21. Last year Knoff took the mound nine times for the Skyhawks, compiling a 3-1 record with a 3.74 E.R.A., 33 strikeouts and an opposing batting average of .257 in 53 innings on the hill. The Skyhawks continue their homestand through Sunday, June 21. Promotions include fireworks following the game on Friday, June 19 as well as a Skyhawks bandana giveaway for the first 1,000 fans. Sunday, June 21, will celebrate Father's Day where there will be a hat giveaway for the first 1,000 fans as well as $.50 hot dogs.
