Congrats coach

Head Coach Dave Leger, in his first season with the Jackals, earned his first win as an ECHL head coach with Friday's 3-2 victory over the Norfolk Admirals. Leger, the 12th Head Coach in Jackals history, is in his second season in the ECHL, serving as an assistant coach with the Evansville Icemen in 2015-16.

In addition to his time in the ECHL, Leger has been a head coach at the University of Ottawa, the Cumberland Grads of the CCHL and two teams in the Asia League, where he won a championship.

Protect the house

The Jackals began their home schedule last weekend with two games against the Admirals. They picked up a 3-2 win in their home opener Friday night, their 10th ECHL home opener. With the win, the Jackals improved to 8-2-0 in ECHL home openers.

The Jackals won their first six home openers from 2007 to 2012 before finally losing their first home game of the season in 2013 against the Reading Royals. Their only other home opening loss came last season at the hands of the Adirondack Thunder in the first ever meeting between the teams.

Game 2: Jackals earn first win in home opener against Norfolk

In a back and forth game, the Jackals topped the Norfolk Admirals, 3-2, in front of 3,510 fans at First Arena in the team's home opener Friday night.

Tyson Fawcett, making his Jackals debut, gave Elmira a 1-0 lead at 5:14 with a power-play goal. He lifted a shot past Connor Knapp on a feed from Kyle Rankin to give the Jackals a first-period lead. The Admirals finally got on the board in the second, with a pair of goals just over a minute apart to go ahead, 2-1, for their first lead of the season. The Jackals pulled even a few minutes later when Paul Geiger, also making his Jackals debut, snapped home a left circle shot with 1:19 to go in the second.

The game remained tied at two deep into the third period until Daultan Leveille tipped in a shot from Davis Vandane with 5:22 left in regulation, putting the Jackals up 3-2. Goaltender John Muse shut the door the rest of the way to preserve the Jackals win .

Game 3: Admirals outlast Jackals in goaltending duel

Eetu Laurikainen made 24 saves and the Admirals broke a scoreless tie in the third period to beat the Jackals, 2-0, Saturday at First Arena.

In a game that featured just two power plays, Laurikainen and Jackals' goalie Andy Iles matched save for save through the first two periods, keeping it a 0-0 game entering the third. The Admirals finally broke through against Iles, with Domenic Alberga scoring a power-play goal 7:28 into the third. Alberga sent the puck towards the crease from the bottom of the right circle and it popped into the net off of Jackals' defenseman Cole Martin for the game's first score.

Norfolk added an empty-net goal with under 10 seconds remaining to make it a 2-0 game. Iles made 29 saves on 30 shots in the losing effort.

Week Ahead

Game 4: Tue., Oct. 25 at Adirondack, 7:00 p.m.

The Jackals have their busiest week to date during the 2016-17 season as they play three games against North Division foe Adirondack Thunder. Two games--Tuesday and Saturday--are at the Glens Falls Civic Center and the other match--Friday--is at First Arena. They are the first three of 10 head-to-head matches this season, with five to be played in Glens Falls and five to be played in Elmira.

The Thunder have points in each of their first three games to begin the 2016-17 season. At 2-0-1-0, they have five points, tied for the most points in the North Division with Manchester. The Thunder have played all three games against the Monarchs this season, winning both games in Manchester opening weekend before dropping last week's game in Glens Falls. After these three games against the Jackals, Adirondack plays three more against Manchester.

Last season the Jackals won the season series, winning seven of the 11 head-to-head matches. Elmira went 4-1 in the five games at the Glens Falls Civic Center and split the six games at First Arena. Two games went past regulation, with the Jackals earning two shootout victories in Elmira. The Jackals won the last three games of the series. Among returning players from 2015-16, Mathieu Brodeur was the leading scorer head-to-head with Elmira, scoring four points (1g, 3a) in 11 games.

In goal, rookie Mason McDonald has played in all three games, allowing 10 goals, giving him a 3.16 goals-against average. With a 2-0-1-0 record, the 34th overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft has a .863 save percentage.
