New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ The New Jersey Jackals trailed early and often, never quite able to climb their way back into tonight's game against the Quebec Les Capitales, as they lost by a final score of 12-5.
After retiring the first five batters with ease, Jackals RHP Joe Orloski (5-7) ran into trouble with 2 outs in the top of the 2nd inning. Les Capitales 3B Ryan Lehr worked a long at-bat for a walk, followed by a double into LF by C Olivier Lépine that sent Lehr to 3rd. DH Mathieu Bergeron dug in to the dish next, and proceeded to unload a 3-run homerun, taking a mistake-pitch from Orloski that hung middle-in over the first wall in RF-CF, giving Quebec the early 3-0 lead.
The Jackals climbed back into it momentarily in the home half of the 3rd. Their first three men up all reached base on singles, loading the bases full of 1B Bill Peavey, C Clay Kuklick, and CF Jason Tuttle. That brought SS Guillermo Reyes to the plate, and his hard liner at 2B Dany Scalabrini was booted for an error. After recovering, Scalabrini was still able to get Kuklick at 3rd for the first out of the inning, but Peavey came in to score and make it a 3-1 game. The bases got juiced up again after DH Joey Gomes drew a 2-out walk. Another error on LF John Lindsey's line drive to SS allowed the Jackals to climb within a run, down just 3-2. But RF Alex Fernandez was then absolutely robbed by 1B Eddie Lantigua, and the one-run deficit was as close as New Jersey would get.
Quebec responded in the 4th as Orloski continued to struggle. Les Capitales would add three runs to their lead on RBIs by Lépine, SS Willie James, and CF Geoffrey Tomlinson. Though Orloski was the starter facing the most difficulty, it was Quebec who would turn to their bullpen, bringing in LHP Juan Hernandez (1-0) to relieve LHP Jason Pilkington with a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the 4th.
The bats on both sides would stay quiet until the 6th inning, when Orloski would get roughed up for two more runs, one coming on a ground rule double by Scalabrini that would get stuck in the RF fence. With an 8-2 advantage heading to the bottom half of the 6th, the Quebec pitchers would give the Jackals an opportunity to get back in the game. The home half began with three different pitchers combining for SIX consecutive walks, with the free passes adding up to three New Jersey runs and the bases loaded. However, the Jackals could not make the most of the chance, and the game would move on with the score stuck at 8-5 in favor of Les Capitales.
Quebec added four more in the 9th, including a 3-run moonshot off the bat of Lehr that soared out of the ballpark and into the Little Falls night sky, easily clearing the second wall in RF-CF. Lehr finished the game 2-for-4 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBIs.
Orloski somehow lasted 5.2 innings in taking the loss for the Jackals, giving up 10 hits and 8 runs, all earned. After Pilkington went just 3 innings allowing 4 hits and 2 runs, but only 1 earned, it was Hernandez who would notch the victory for Les Capitales. He pitched 2 innings and surrendered a lone hit and a pair of runs.
The series continues tomorrow night at Yogi Berra Stadium at 7:05. It is two-for-Tuesday and Montclair night, and great seats still remain. Call the Jackals box office at (973) 655-8025 for more information.
