Jackals Split Doubleheader with St. Paul
June 5, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release
In game one, St. Paul Saints' starter Robert Coe was brilliant, throwing a complete game shutout.
Jackals starter Matt Chico went five and two-third innings and only gave up an unearned run, but it wasn't enough as the Jackals fell to the visiting Saints 2-0 in the first game of the Tuesday night doubleheader.
After Saints second baseman Adam Frost doubled and advanced to third, he came home on an error by Jackals' pitcher Matt Chico, who slipped while fielding DH Shane Costa's two-out ground-out in the fifth inning.
Nick Giarraputo and Carols Guzman combined for two of the three Jackals two hits. The Jackals were able to load the bases in the bottom of the 5th against Saints starter Robert Coe, but were unable to capitalize.
Chico allowed six hits and was able to work out of trouble multiple times, including a bases-load situation in the 5th, leaving to a standing ovation the following inning.
For Saints' manager George Tsamis, this was his first return to New Jersey since he led the Jackals to two Northern Conference championships in 2001 and 2002, his two seasons with the club. He has been with the Saints ever since, winning one title in 2004.
In game two, Jackals starter Steve Fox went six and one-third two-hit innings, matching his longest outing of the season. Jackals rode a three-run first inning en route to their 3-2 win over the St. Paul Saints in game two of Tuesday's doubleheader at Yogi Berra Stadium.
Fox finished with eight strikeouts and two walks. His win improves him to 3-0 on the season.
On the offensive side, Nick Giarraputo led the way with a two-out, two-run single in the first, giving him a Can-Am leading 20 RBIs on the season. Carlos Guzman followed up with an RBI double to score Giarraputo.
Saints' starting pitcher Chris Odegaard moves to 0-3 on the season. He pitched five innings, striking out and walking five.
The Saints' two runs came courtesy of Jose Hernandez's first home run of the season, a solo shot, and a sacrifice fly in the fifth by James Rapoport.
With the win, the Jackals move to 11-7 on the season. Coupled with a Quebec loss, they move into sole possession of first place in the Can-Am League standings.
The two squads will face off again tomorrow morning in a special 11am start time. LHP Jon Kibler (2-0, 7.90 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound for the Jackals. RHP Wes Roemer (2-0, 2.60) will start for the Saints. They'll then square off in game four on Thursday night, with that one scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m.
The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2012 single-game tickets, season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 973-746-7434.
