Capitales' 11th Inning Error Sinks Them 5-3

June 5, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Johnny Welch hit a deep fly ball with two outs in the eleventh inning that was bobbled by Steve Brown, plating two runs as the Tornadoes defeated Les Quebec Capitales 5-3 at Le Stade Municipal on Tuesday night.

Michael Bourdon )1-0) notched his first win in a Tornadoes uniform with one inning of relief, allowing one hit and one walk. Both he and Nick Serino intentionally walked batters to set-up inning-ending double plays, as the Capitales threatened to score in the ninth and tenth for walk-off victories.

Matt McDonald earned his second save of the season with a scoreless eleventh, allowing one hit.

Guillaume Duguay was tagged with the loss (0-2), despite striking out four batters and not allowing a hit in 2.2 innings of work. He walked two batters, including Tony Patane, who scored the winning run (which was unearned).

Dexter Bobo relieved Duguay and pitched one-third of an inning, walking one batter and serving up the game-winning play with Welch at the plate (along with an unearned insurance run in the form of Jerod Edmondson, who walked against him).

Both starters made it through at least seven innings, allowing three runs apiece. Phil Negus gave up just two earned runs, recording ten groundball outs, three 1-2-3 innings, and two strikeouts (plus one walk and five hits).

Bryan Rembisz went eight innings for Quebec, giving up three runs (all earned) on just 98 pitches. He struck out just one batter, walked none, and gave up five hits, including Nick Salotti's two-run homer in the second (which scored Alex Trezza in front of him). At that point, Worcester led 3-0.

The Tornadoes' other run came in the first, when Jerod Edmondson hit a sacrifice fly to score Cameron Monger, who had doubled, then moved to third on a Brandon Pinckney groundout.

Pinckney left the game after the tenth inning after receiving a hard slide from Jeff Helps, who was trying to break up one of three inning-ending twin killings the Tornadoes had in the field. On the same play, Patane lunged to his right to keep the ball in the infield, threw a perfect toss to Pinckney, then Brandon launched a strong throw to first before taking the slide. Josh Colafemina-- who had tripled earlier that inning-- would have scored if the play weren't made.

Serino pitched two scoreless innings, starting his night with a 1-2-3 eighth. He struck out one Capitales hitter, walked one (intentionally) and allowed one hit.

The Tornadoes will try for the series victory with a win on Wednesday night, as Zach Zuercher toes the slab for Worcester. The first pitch in Quebec City is at 7:05pm, with Tornadoes Pre-Game Live beginning at 6:50 on USTREAM.tv.
