June 5 Recap (Fixed for Worcester-Quebec score in recap)

Tuesday, June 5th, 2012

Worcester 5, Quebec 3 (11 innings)

After more than 10 innings of tie baseball, the Tornadoes put two runs on the board in the top of the 11th to take the game against the Quebec Capitales, 5-3. Jerod Edmondson and Tony Patane scored the go-ahead runs on a Quebec error, having both reached on walks. The Tornadoes took a 3-0 lead after two innings, with a Nick Salotti two-run homer pushing the second and third runs across. But the Capitales fought back, tying the score on a Josue Pele double in the sixth. Pele went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Salotti's two RBI tied Quebec's Jeff Helps for the game high. Helps went 1-for-4 on the night.

Rockland 7, Newark 4 (Game 1 - 7 innings)

Trailing, 4-0, after the first inning of baseball in Game 1 on Tuesday, the Rockland Boulders dug in and prepared for a short-game comeback effort. That effort culminated in a three-run seventh that gave the Boulders a 7-4 victory over the Bears of Newark. With the score tied at four runs apiece in the top of the seventh and the bases loaded, Rockland 1B Ryan Scoma cleared the bags with a double - his only hit of the evening. Newark's built its early lead on the back of 1B Daryle Ward, who hit a three-run homer in the team's four-run first frame. Ward - who later scored on a Bryce Lane sacrifice fly - managed no more hits in the game.

Rockland 12, Newark 5 (Game 2 - 7 innings)

The Boulders scored eight runs in the top of the fourth with 1B Ryan Scoma hitting a two-run homer to get the scoring party started, and Rockland defeated Newark, 12-5 in Game 2. Scoma plated four runs and was a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-for-5. Starting Boulders pitcher Julian Sampson earned the victory, throwing five innings and allowing five runs on five hits with four strikeouts. For Newark, CF Bryce Lane hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth. But the Bears didn't capitalize on the momentum like Rockland had a half inning earlier.

St. Paul 2, New Jersey 0 (Game 1 - 7 innings)

Saints starting pitcher Robert Coe gave the bullpen a rest in Game 1 of St. Paul's doubleheader with New Jersey on Tuesday, throwing a complete-game three-hitter, striking out three Jackals batters to earn his second win. Coe's ERA is now 3.06. The St. Paul offense struggled against Jackals starter Matt Chico but finally pushed a run across in the fifth to take the lead for good. Though saddled with the loss, Chico threw an impressive 5.2 innings, allowing only one run on six hits with two strikeouts. Saints RF Jose Hernandez scored the team's second run in the seventh to cap off a good offensive night. Hernandez walked twice and went 1-for-2 with a run scored.

New Jersey 3, St. Paul 2 (Game 2 - 7 innings)

Jackals 3B Nick Giarraputo singled in two of his club's three first-inning runs, helping turn an early 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 advantage that turned into a 3-2 win over the St. Paul Saints. Giarraputo later scored on a double by RF Carlos Guzman. Starting Jackals pitcher Steve Fox struck out 10 Saints batters and registered all but the final two outs, throwing 6.1 innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits. Fox now has 30 strikeouts to just 11 walks on the season in four starts. Saints RF Jose Hernandez hit a solo home run in the top of the first to give his team a 1-0 lead but went 0-for-2 from that point on.
