September 27, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release
The Elmira Jackals announced Monday that they have signed forwards Maxime Tanguay and Rob Bellamy to contracts for the upcoming 2010-2011 season. Tanguay is currently in training camp with the AHL's Chicago Wolves while Bellamy is training with the AHL's Worcester Sharks.
Tanguay had a prolific rookie season with the Toledo Walleye, scoring 69 points (25g-44a) over 66 games in 2009-2010, third-best among ECHL rookies. His assists total was second in the league, helping Tanguay earn ECHL All-Rookie Team honors.
A native of Lac Etchemin, Quebec, Tanguay was one of two Walleye players named to the 2010 American Conference All-Star Team, notching an assist in the American Conference's shootout victory.
Tanguay, the younger brother of Calgary Flames forward Alex Tanguay, also played in five games with the AHL's Rockford IceHogs last season, garnering an assist. He was selected 69th overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks.
Prior to turning pro, Tanguay spent five seasons in the QMJHL, totaling 72 goals and 120 assists for 192 points in 257 games with Chicoutimi, Rimouski, and Victoriaville. Tanguay's 66 points and 40 assists led Victoriaville in the 2008-2009 season.
"Maxime had an outstanding rookie season," Jackals head coach Malcolm Cameron said. "He has very good hands, is very quick, and very explosive. With the new rules in hockey over the past couple of seasons, speed is now a major attibute to any player and Max has a lot of that in his game."
"'I've talked with Malcolm a lot and I know he likes the type of player that I am," Tanguay said. "I learned a lot last year in Toledo and had a great experience and I think that will help me this year."
Bellamy enters his third professional season having spent his first two with the AHL's Philadelphia/Adirondack Phantoms. Through 114 games in the American League, Bellamy has four goals and eight assists along with 38 penalty minutes.
In four seasons at the University of Maine (NCAA, D-1), Bellamy and the Black Bears experienced sustained success, reaching the Frozen Four in his sophomore and junior seasons, losing to eventual champions Wisconsin in 2006 and Michigan State in 2007 in the national semifinals. Maine reached the NCAA Tournament in his freshman season of 2004-2005 as well.
Over 138 career games with Maine, Bellamy scored 48 points (14g-34a) and led the Black Bears in penalty minutes with 77 in 2005-2006 and 61 in 2007-2008. A native of Westfield, Mass., Bellamy served as a captain in his senior year.
"Rob is a great character player," Cameron said. "He's an excellent skater, a hard hitter, and will provide good leadership."
"It's a good opportunity for me as it's in a centralized location," Bellamy said. "[I plan on] playing my role, playing my hardest every game, being physical, doing the little things right, and being consistent."
