Jackals Set ECHL Record In Win Over Devils

November 29, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release

The Elmira Jackals on Sunday afternoon set an ECHL record at First Arena, holding the Trenton Devils to only eight shots on goal, the fewest ever by a team in a regular season game. The previous record for fewest shots on goal in a game was nine, registered by Bakersfield in 2004 and Arkansas in 2000.

Yannick Tifu had two goals and one assist in the victory, and now has nine points in five games with the Jackals. Chris Korchinski added two goals and an assist as well, as the Jackals earned their 10th win of 2009-2010.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first period on a Dave Leaderer goal, Korchinski evened the score 1-1 at 19:43 of the opening period. Tifu's shot from the right wing was deflected by Korchinski, who redirected it past Devils goaltender Gerald Coleman to tie the game.

Tifu then scored a pair of goals to turn the game in the Jackals favor. At 5:37 of the second period, Tifu made a nice individual effort to skate in on Coleman and beat him stick side for the 2-1 advantage, which proved to be the game-winning goal. Justin Donati recorded an assist on the play as well, giving him 22 assists on the season, which is tied league lead. Tifu then recorded his second goal of the game at 12:06 of the second period, knocking a puck past Coleman during a scramble in front of the net to give the Jackals the 3-1 lead.

Moments later, the Jackals blew the game open. Brendan Connolly brushed Coleman as he skated by the goaltender, causing Coleman to ask for a penalty. In the meantime, Keegan Dansereau had received the puck in the right circle and fired it past Coleman who was not watching the play, and the Jackals made it 4-1.

The Jackals notched two third period goals, with Korchinski and Donati recording the tallies. Korchinski made a great individual effort at 2:34 of the third period to reach a long feed from Guillaume Lepine, skate across Coleman, and slide it past him to make it 5-1. Donati then buried home a goal for his 31st point of the season, which is tied for the league lead, on a feed from Maxime Gratchev at 3:22 to make it 6-1.

As the clock wound down at First Arena, the Devils were unable to generate any sort of offense, as the Jackals continually broke up Devils bids to simply enter the Elmira zone. The Jackals held the Devils to one third-period shot, and the horn sounded with the Devils recording only eight shots on goal.

This was the second time in 2009-2010 in which the Jackals flirted with history at home against the Devils. On Nov. 6, the Devils beat the Jackals 4-3 in overtime at First Arena, denying the Jackals their eighth straight win to begin the season which would have tied an ECHL record. With their strong defensive play on Sunday, however, the Jackals earned a spot in the ECHL record book against the Devils at First Arena. With the victory, the Jackals moved back into first place in the American East Division, one point ahead of the Reading Royals. The Royals were trailing 4-2 after two periods of play at Johnstown on Sunday evening.

Michael-Lee Teslak made seven saves in the win for the Jackals, improving to 5-3-1-1 on the season. Coleman stopped 34 of 40 Jackals shots, falling to 5-3-0-2.

Over two games this weekend, the Jackals outshot the Devils 95-28.

The Jackals travel down south next weekend for a game on Friday with the Charlotte Checkers, and Saturday and Sunday games with the South Carolina Stingrays.
