Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - In a Saturday night matchup the Victoria Salmon Kings and Ontario Reign met in the finale of a two-game set at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Victoria's David Shantz started in net, while the Reign countered with Curtis Darling.

Victoria took a quick 1-0 lead just 1:40 into the game when a puck chipped out of the Salmon Kings zone by defenseman Tim Wedderburn became a two-on-one for Olivier Latendresse and Mike Hamilton. Latendresse kept the puck and let a quick shot go from the right faceoff circle that Darling denied with a right pad save. A goal mouth scramble ensued, and Latendresse finished what he started by poking in his fifth goal of the campaign past Darling. The Salmon Kings doubled their lead at the 12:30 mark when Wedderburn took a feed from Latendresse behind the net and wired home his first goal of the season past Darling's glove and into the net. The Salmon Kings would take their 2-0 lead into the intermission.

The Salmon Kings controlled the majority of the play in the first half of the second period, earning a 5-on-3 power play and holding Ontario without a shot on net until the halfway point of the frame. At 14:05, Dirk Southern would extend Victoria's advantage to 3-0 with a power play goal when he took a pass from defenseman Jimmy Sharrow and fired a wrist shot from the right face-off circle that eluded Darling's blocker. Southern's tally was his second of the year. Defenseman Patrick Coulombe made it a 4-0 game at 17:01 when he controlled a Wes Goldie rebound off of Darling's pad in the right faceoff circle and beat the Ontario goaltender's blocker through traffic with a snap shot. Coulombe's goal was his second of the season and gave the Salmon Kings a 4-0 edge heading into the second intermission.

Andy Brant made it 5-0 for the home team at 18:25 on the power play. The Salmon Kings forward, perched just outside of the crease, one-timed an Adam Taylor pass from behind the net through the pads of Darling. Brandt's goal was his fifth of the season, and rounded out the scoring for the game as the Salmon Kings swept the mini two-game set. Salmon Kings 5 Reign 0.

Victoria went 2/540.0% on the power play, while Ontario was 0/40.0%. The Salmon Kings outshot the Reign 32-22.
