Jackals Rally Twice, Only to Lose Shootout in Quad City

February 12, 2017 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release

MOLINE, ILL. - The Elmira Jackals (9-33-6-1) rallied from deficits of 2-0 and 3-2, but never led in a 4-3 shootout loss to the Quad City Mallards (28-18-0-2) Sunday night at the iWireless Center.

Quad City continued its first period dominance, taking a 2-1 lead over the Jackals in the first period. The Mallards opened the scoring 6:01 into the first period, taking advantage of a delayed penalty by tallying with an extra attacker. Alex Gudbranson took a point shot, which was tipped by Sam Warning in the slot, giving the Mallards a 1-0 lead for the 11th straight game.

The Mallards built the lead to two, converting on a double minor penalty. Late in the first of the two penalties, Justin Kovacs came away with the puck after an extended scrum along the left wing boards and wristed a shot from near the left circle. The goal, at 9:55, gave Quad City a 2-0 lead, the ninth game in a row the Mallards have scored the first two goals.

Elmira controlled play the rest of the first period and pulled within one on a 5-on-3 power-play goal. Sebastien Sylvestre had the puck near the left circle and he fired a pass to the bottom of the right circle where Matt Lane one-timed his eighth goal of the season for a 2-1 game at 15:34.

For the second straight night, the Jackals rallied from a 2-0 deficit, tying the game in the second period on a second power-play goal for Lane. An attempted Jackals pass was sticked out of midair by a Mallards forward, but the puck popped to Lane, who fired home a shot from the left circle at 6:12 of the second. Kenton Miller and Sylvestre picked up the assists as Lane registered his second multi-goal game of the season.

Quad City grabbed its second lead of the night 11:21 into the third period on a goal down low Brady Brassart, but the Jackals continued to show fight. They once again tied the game, this time at three, on their third power-play goal of the game. Sylvestre sent the puck to the front where Kenton Miller tipped it home for his third goal in two games against the Mallards, tying the game at 17:14 and sending the game to overtime for the second straight night.

Neither team scored in the five-minute overtime so it went to a shootout, where the Mallards scored the only goal, with Justin Kovacs lifting a shot past Andy Iles. The Jackals were stymied on their three attempts and dropped the game, 4-3 .
