New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - Starter A.J. Wideman pitched six solid innings and the New Jersey Jackals plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning en route to a 3-1 victory over the Pittsfield Colonials on Tuesday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.
On his 25th birthday, Wideman (2-1) earned the win, allowing one run while scattering eight hits over six innings. The southpaw struck out three batters while walking just one. The New Jersey bullpen was solid as Edward Rodriguez and Mike Pontius held the Colonials scoreless over the seventh and eighth innings before Romas Hicks closed it out in the ninth to notch his league-leading sixth save in as many attempts.
Pittsfield used an RBI groundout off the bat of first baseman Jerod Edmondson in the top of the fourth inning to open up the scoring, but New Jersey countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead. After a one-out single by catcher Jordan Newton, center fielder Jeff Grose laced a two-out double to left to even the score at one. The next batter, right fielder Kevin Clark, singled to right to send Grose home with what proved to be the game-winning run.
The Jackals tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Clark lifted a fly ball to center that fell in for an RBI double when Colonials' second baseman Danny Bomback collided with center fielder Daniel Carte.
Former Jackal Dave Qualben (0-2) surrendered two runs on six hits in five innings, but took the loss for the Colonials. Another former Jackal, left-hander Giuseppe Granitto, yielded New Jersey's third run of the game in the sixth.
Clark led the charge offensively for New Jersey, going 3-for-4 with a double, a steal, and two RBIs out of the leadoff spot. Grose, the Jackals' ninth-place hitter, scored twice and stole two bases in addition to his run-scoring double.
After a 13-hour layoff, the Jackals and Colonials will be back in action for game two of their three-game series on Wednesday at 11:05 a.m. New Jersey sends right-hander Dan Griffin (0-0, 6.75 ERA) to the mound against Pittsfield righty Chance Corgan (0-0, 3.60 ERA). Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
Jackal Bites: Hicks has saved each of New Jersey's six wins this season, which have come by a combined nine runs... Colonials' manager Brian Daubach was ejected from the game in the top of the first inning. It was his first ejection of the season... The Jackals are 4-1 on their season-opening homestand after beginning the 2010 campaign 2-5 while playing on the road at Sussex and Pittsfield.
