Augusta, N.J. - Brockton starter Mike Smith threw eight superb innings, giving up just one run on three hits for the victory as the Rox defeated the Sussex Skyhawks, 3-1, in a Can-Am League affair at Skylands Park on Tuesday evening.

Sussex kicked off the scoring with its lone run in the fourth inning, when 1B Kris Sanchez brought home SS Chase Fontaine on an RBI groundout.

Brockton quickly responded with a run in the fifth, as LF Mike Conroy singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, went to third on a groundout, and came home on a two-out double steal. The Rox then took the lead for good the following frame when, with two outs, C Chris Grossman singled in DH Clyde Williams and Conroy.

The 3-1 score would stand the rest of the way, as Smith (2-1) mowed down the Skyhawks' lineup, allowing just three singles and fanning six. Josh Papelbon threw a scoreless ninth inning for his third save of the year.

Mike McGuire (2-1) was tagged with the loss for Sussex (6-6), allowing three runs on six hits in six innings of work.

Conroy, SS Dominic Ramos and 3B Philip Cuadrado each had a pair of base knocks for the Rox (6-6). 1B Melvin Falu's double to lead off the sixth inning was the only extra-base hit for either side.

Brockton is idle Wednesday before returning to Campanelli Stadium for a single game Thursday against the Worcester Tornadoes at 7:05 p.m. The evening marks the first Thirsty Thursday of the season, with $2 drink specials throughout the game.
