Sussex Skyhawks News Release
Tuesday night at CenturyLink Field at Skylands Park featured great starting pitching and even better bullpen work, but the Sussex Skyhawks (6-6) came out on the losing end. The Brockton Rox (6-6) came back from an early 1-0 deficit to win 3-1 and sweep the two-game series. Brockton starter RHP Mike Smith picked up the win, going eight strong innings to the tune of just one run on three hits and two walks. Sussex's RHP Mike McGuire was almost as good, throwing six innings and allowing three runs on six hits and three walks. He extended his streak of innings without an earned run to 17.1 before it was broken by C Chris Grossman's two-RBI single in the sixth.
Both bullpens held their opponents scoreless in the late innings. RHP Kevin Gunter threw the seventh and eighth for Sussex before giving way to RHP Duaner Sanchez in the ninth. Brockton's RHP Josh Papelbon closed out the victory in the bottom half of the final frame to pick up his third save of the season.
The Skyhawks have played thirteen days in a row to begin the 2010 Can-Am League season, but they will get their first two off-days of the year on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday, they will welcome back the New Jersey Jackals for a three-game weekend series at CenturyLink Field at Skylands Park. Friday night is the second Fireworks Night of the season, sponsored by The Orthopedic Institute of New Jersey. Limited tickets may be available.
