Elmira Jackals News Release
Week 17 Game Results:
2/4/05 PORT HURON 3 - Jackals 2
Elmira, NY - The Port Huron Beacons never trailed Friday night as they beat the Elmira Jackals 3-2 at the First Arena.
Playing in their third meeting of the season, and the first in Elmira since last season's Eastern Conference Finals, the Jackals and Beacons played an evenly contested, defensive first period. Aaron Brand knocked home a rebound at 12:32, his 15th of the year, to put Port Huron on top 1-0 after the first period.
In the middle frame Elmira struck back with a power play goal from Jamie Thompson at 7:08, assisted by Eddy Lowe and Trevor Burgess. For Thompson it was his 17th goal of the season and it leveled the score at 1-1. Port Huron answered late in the period with a power play of their own, scored on a coast-to-coast run by Ian Jacobs, beating the fallen Greg Hewitt at 17:32 for a 2-1 lead after forty minutes.
In the third period Elmira again tied up the game quickly. Nathan Gillies rushed in on goalie Stu Dunn, but was taken down by Shayne Tomlinson, drawing a delayed call from the referee. But while the Beacons scrambled to touch the puck, Carl Drakensjo swooped in and slotted a wrist shot past Dunn for a shorthanded goal to tie the game at 4:28; Gillies and Corey Foster assisted on the goal. But the Beacons had all the answers Friday night; they would take the lead for good just 80 seconds later. UHL leading goal scorer David Beauregard scored his 36th goal of the year at 5:45 to regain the one-goal lead 3-2. That would prove to the be decisive strike, despite Elmira having two more power plays before the end of regulation.
Stu Dunn became the first Beacon to hit double digit wins earning his 10th of the season while making 26 saves on 28 shots. Greg Hewitt dropped to 14-25-5 on the year while making 33 saves on 36 Beacons shots.
2/5/05 DANBURY 6 - Jackals 2
Danbury, CT - The Danbury Trashers steamrolled the Elmira Jackals on their way to a 6-2 victory Saturday night at the Danbury Ice Arena.
With special teams a-blazing, it did not take long for the home side the jump out front. Danbury scored their first of two short-handed goals on the night at 3:15 when Bruce Richardson poked a rebound from Mike Bayrack's initial shot through the legs of Greg Hewitt for a 1-0 Trashers lead. Elmira answered with a vengeance; Nathan Gillies lifted a rebound up over the fallen Ryan McIntosh at 4:31 for his 10th goal of the season, a power play goal assisted by Jamie Thompson and Corey Foster. 16 seconds later it was 2-1 Jackals when Carl Drakensjo tipped home a Dean Jackson shot at 4:47; Derek Campbell, who was re-assigned from Binghamton prior to the game, also assisted on the goal. Regardless of Elmira's quick strikes, that would be the last Jackals offense to make the score sheet. Danbury would add their second short-handed goal of the period at 16:17 by way of a J.F. David goal to tie the game at two.
In the second period Danbury took the lead for good. The Trashers regained the lead at 7:30 with a power play goal by Richardson, his second goal of the game. David also scored his second of the night at 11:01 of the period to make it 4-2 Danbury after two.
The garbage men sent this game to the printers with two more goals in the third period from Alex Goupil and newcomer John Mirasty to complete the 6-2 romp.
Ryan McIntosh recovered from his shaky start to the game to pick up the win in his Danbury debut, making 27 saves on 29 Jackals shots. Greg Hewitt took the loss, stopping 35-of-41 in goal for the Jackals.
