Norfolk Admirals News Release
ELMIRA, N.Y. - A two-goal deficit for most of the night proved sufficient for the Elmira Jackals as the Norfolk Admirals lost 4-3 Wednesday night at First Arena.
Six minutes into Wednesday night's action, Elmira moved in front. As Norfolk's Quinn Smith left the penalty box, the Jackals' Allan MacPherson crossed a pass from the left corner through the Admirals' defense to Kevin Clare near the top of the right circle. Clare wound and fired an attempt over rookie Norfolk goaltender Philippe Cadorette's shoulder for the first marker of the night at 5:59. The goal came one second after Smith's penalty expired.
Elmira's thin lead lasted into the second period before expanding to 2-0 at 13:08. Tyler Currier snapped a shot from atop the left circle that Cadorette shouldered high into the air. The puck fell to the ice behind Cadorette and trickled across the goal line before he could swipe it away.
Two minutes and eight seconds following Currier's fortune, Charles-Olivier Roussel extended his point streak to five games with a shot from the right point that Tommy Mele redirected for his team-leading seventh goal on the year. Radoslav Illo led the puck up the right wall to the top of the zone for Roussel who gathered before triggering a blast. Mele knocked it down on its way to fool Elmira goalie Niklas Lundstrom at 15:16 of the middle frame to slice the two-goal lead in half.
However, the Jackals answered quickly with a shorthanded goal at 17:06 of the second. Elmira cleared the puck to the other end on a Norfolk power play, forcing Cadorette to retreat behind the net. As Cadorette looked to outlet, Mike Seidel pressured the rookie netminder and blocked the pass. Seidel collected the loose puck, and fed the oncoming MacPherson for an easy one-timer beneath a diving Cadorette. Two unconventional goals distanced Elmira to a 3-1 advantage with one period left.
Barely a minute into the final frame, Norfolk stormed into Jackals' territory with Michael Pelech in control. Pelech pulled up at the right point, and slid a crisp pass all the way across to Ben Betker as Alexandre Ranger drove to the back post. Betker hit Ranger's stick with a perfect pass that left most of the net wide open for an easy strike at 1:19.
The 3-2 score lasted a minute and 26 seconds. Mike Seidel stood near the goal line to the left of the cage and jabbed a second attempt between Cadorette and the post for his eighth of the season. Elmira scooted back to a two-goal lead and it was 4-2 with 17:15 left in regulation.
Norfolk made a valiant final surge in the closing minutes when Currier sat for holding. On the power play, Admirals defenseman Nick Pageau slapped a shot from the right point into Lundstrom's chest who couldn't squeeze it. Nick MacNeil drifted into the slot and swatted the loose puck for his third goal in the last three games. The marker came at 1:36 of the third, but the Jackals hung on to escape with a 4-3 win.
The Admirals recorded a season-high 54 shots on net, three of which beat Elmira's Lundstrom. In only his second start of the year, Cadorette denied 29 of 33 shots he faced. Norfolk capitalized on a man advantage for the fifth straight game, and held the Jackals scoreless on five power-play opportunities.
Glens Falls, N.Y. is the next destination as the Admirals square off with the Adirondack Thunder at 7 p.m. this Friday.
Three Stars of the Game:
1. ELM - 9 Allan MacPherson
2. ELM - 17 Mike Seidel
3. ELM - 35 Niklas Lundstrom
