Jackals Jump on Sausville, Win 10-4

On a warm summer evening of July 16, the Tornadoes played theri first league game since June 24.

The Jackals, the number-two team in the Canadian American Professional Baseball League, showed the Tornadoes what they were missing. The New Jersey ballclub scored a run in each of the last five innings en route to a 10-4 win in Worcester, MA Monday night.

David Birosak earned the win for the New Jersey side in his first start in 2012 after spending most of the season in the bullpen. He went five frames, giving up all of the Tornadoes eight hits, while walking three and failing to record a strike out.

Dan Sausville picked up his seventh loss of the season, giving up eight runs (six earned) over his six and a third innings pitched. He only walked one and struck out two, throwing 110 pitches.

The game started as a back and forth affair, with the Jackals getting on the board in the top of the first after Brian Sabatella scored on a Johnny Welch error.

The Orange and Black countered right away, with Johnny Welch redeeming himself by knocking in Ryan Brockett to tie the game.

The Tornadoes added two runs in the bottom of the second, which started with Mike Samela hitting his first professional home run. The Amherst College graduate ended the day with two walks, two runs, and an RBI. Ryan Brockett then followed up his run in the first with an RBI in the third, clubbing in Jerod Edmondson from second base to give the Tornadoes the lead 3-1.

The Jackals made sure that they did not trail for very long. Jeff Lanning lead off the top of the fourth with a home run of his own, which followed with Chris Curran scoring on an error by Ryan Brockett in left field off a Bryan Sabatella single.

The Tornadoes took the lead again in the bottom of the fourth after Jerod Edmondson lost his helment hustling to second on an RBI double. However, the Jackals countered right back in the top of the fifth, after Angel Berroa smacked a single to score Jeff Lanning from third base.

The Jackals then took off for the rest of the game. A Jeff Lanning double scored Nick Salotti and Carlos Guzman in the sixth, which was followed by Angel Berroa's second RBI single of the game. Nick Salotti then hit an RBI single of his own against his former team, increasing his hitting streak to five since joining the New Jersey club. Angel Berroa then got his third RBI single in the eighth off of reliever Bryan Leigh, driving in Chris Curran from second base. Nick Giarraputo capped off the New Jersey effort with a home run off Cam Kneeland in the top of the ninth, the final run scored in the game.

The Tornadoes fell to 17-and-38 after the July 16th loss, remaining in fourth place. New Jersey stayed six games back of the league-leading Capitales, who improved to 31-24.
