Elmira Jackals News Release
ELMIRA, NY - The Elmira Jackals, proud member of the ECHL, announced today that they have obtained their first National Hockey League affiliation as a member of the ECHL, signing a one-year agreement with the Columbus Blue Jackets for the 2007-08 season.
The Jackals enter their first year of play in the ECHL as the sole "AA" affiliate of the Blue Jackets and their American Hockey League affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch.
"We are very pleased to have the Elmira Jackals as our ECHL affiliate. The foundation of any successful franchise is the development of its young players and we think this relationship will be a very positive one for our organization," said Blue Jackets General Manager Scott Howson.
"We think the close proximity of Elmira to our AHL affiliate in Syracuse will be a tremendous benefit for both those clubs and an asset to our efforts to develop players at the minor professional level," Howson added.
Elmira and Syracuse are approximately 90 miles apart, benefiting the Blue Jackets organization with reduced travel costs and more timely transactions between their two minor league affiliates. Columbus had previously been affiliated with the Dayton (Ohio) Bombers of the ECHL.
"We are excited with the opportunity to have our ECHL affiliate in Elmira," said Syracuse Crunch President and CEO Howard Dolgon. "The affiliation with Elmira is an opportunity to link the Twin Tiers and Central New York, allowing fans of both organizations an opportunity to follow the development of Columbus' prospects."
No minimum player commitment is included in the affiliation agreement, but it is expected that Columbus will be reassigning several players from Syracuse to Elmira prior to the start of the Jackals training camp Friday morning at First Arena.
"This is one more element that further solidifies the professional hockey landscape in Elmira," stated Jackals general manager Robbie Nichols. "The reaction by the fans after we announced our move to the ECHL was tremendous, and now working with two outstanding organizations and what that will mean to the players here is very exciting."
