Barnes Reassigned To Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The New York Rangers of the National Hockey League have reassigned forward, Joe Barnes, to the Charlotte Checkers.

Barnes, 6-foot-3, 212 pounds, was originally a draft pick of the Carolina Hurricanes in the third round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. He played five seasons in the Western Hockey League for the Saskatoon Blades recording 152 points (69 goals and 83 assists) and 266 penalty minutes in 240 career games.

Barnes' first professional campaign was with the Albany River Rats of the American Hockey League during the 2006-07 season. In 15 games for Albany, he compiled two goals and one assist for three points. After suffering a concussion in early December, Barnes was forced to miss the remainder of the season due to injury.

On July 17, the Rangers traded Matt Cullen for Barnes, Andrew Hutchinson and a third round draft pick in 2008. Barnes is set to join the Checkers training camp which begins on Monday.

The Checkers enter their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL on Oct. 19 against the Columbia Inferno. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers will enter their third season of play at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena this fall. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $399.
