Elmira Jackals News Release

The Trenton Devils defeated the Elmira Jackals 3-1 at First Arena in Elmira, N.Y. on Friday night, scoring three goals before the Jackals got on the board. The loss was the first for the Jackals since they fell to the Devils at home 12 days ago.

After a scoreless first period, the Devils jumped on the board early in the second with a goal from Matt Vokes, the reigning Sher-Wood Hockey ECHL Player of the Week, on the power play just 21 seconds in.

Vokes added another, which would prove to be the game winner, with a wrist shot from the left circle at 5:22 to make it 2-0 Devils. The goal was his sixth in the last two games.

Jack Combs then took a feed from Brett Wilson at 9:58 and deked Jackals goaltender Andy Chiodo forehand-backhand to give the Devils a 3-0 advantage over the Jackals. It was the third straight game the Devils played in Elmira in which they scored at least three goals before the Jackals scored one.

The second period saw the Jackals get outshot by the Devils 14-2. Elmira followed that up by outshooting Trenton 21-1 in the third period, but the Jackals had a tough time figuring out how to beat the Devils' netminder.

The Jackals finally solved Devils goaltender Dave Caruso at 15:23 of the third period when Justin Donati's shot on a scramble in front went into the net to give the Jackals their lone goal of the game. Tyler Donati had an assist on the goal, extending his league-leading scoring streak to 15 games, while Justin Donati increased his streak to 14 contests.

Trenton held on to win it, 3-1, for its fifth straight victory, improving to 23-23-4-5 in 2009-2010, while Elmira fell to 30-19-3-2 on the season.

Chiodo sufferred his first loss with the Jackals, making 23 saves on 26 shots and having his record change to 4-1-0-0, while Caruso earned his fifth straight win, upping his record to 13-14-1-1 on the season.

The Jackals host the Wheeling Nailers on Saturday night at First Arena, with the game beginning at 7:35 p.m. For tickets, visit the First Arena Box Office, call (607) 734-PUCK (7825).
