Jackals Gain Valuable Points On Generals

December 12, 2003 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Elmira Jackals News Release

The Jackals grabbed two very important points in the Eastern Conference Standings with a 3-2 win Friday night against the Flint Generals at the First Arena. With the win Elmira is just one point behind a three-way tie for first place (Richmond, Flint and Columbus).

Elmira jumped out to a quick start as Jamie Thompson netted his second goal of the year at 2:04 of the first period from Don Smith and Greg Koehler. Head Coach Todd Brost said prior to the game that a fast paced, high tempo hockey game was the key to success against a Flint team that lacks the Jackals depth. However, with the exception of the opening two minutes of the game, this contest would grind away for the next 38 minutes without another goal. In the third period Trevor Burgess gave the Jackals some breathing room, driving home a one-timer from J.F. Boutin to make it 2-0; Randy Murphy also had an assist on the goal. With Jackals goaltender Peter Aubry looking sharp, the game had all the feel of another Aubry shutout. A turnover at the tail end of a power play gave the Generals some life; Kahlil Thomas scored his first of the year from Martin Woods to make it 3-1. Elmira wouldn't get the shutout, but were determined to receive full points. Cal Benazic scored his third goal of the season on a nasty wrist shot from the point, assisted by Boutin and Murphy, which made it 3-1. But some questionable decisions by the officials led to a Flint goal, making the finale interesting. Kevin Kerr snuck his eleventh of the year from Kahlil Thomas and Jim Duhart with 1:33 left, but Elmira would hang on for the win. Aubry finished with 38 saves on 48 shots, while Flint keeper Dan McIntyre stopped 24 of 26.

Jackals will do it all over again Saturday night against Flint at the First Arena. Face off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
