Columbus Stars News Release
Evan Cheverie scored 22 seconds into the third period to complete his hat trick and push the game into an overtime shoot out tonight at the Ohio Expo Center Coliseum. Steve Rodberg scored in the sixth round of the overtime tie-breaker to give the Stars the full two points, 4-3 over the Missouri River Otters.
Cheverie started the scoring for the Stars (12-5-4) at the 9:17 mark of the first on assists from Nick Bootland and Scott Levins. Missouri (4-16-3) scored the next three goals of the game including two 55 seconds apart in the first period. Jesse Heerema, the brother of Jeff Heerema with the St. Louis Blues, scored the River Otters' first tally at 11:55 of the opening period. Newly acquired forward Chris Bell scored less than a minute later to give Missouri a 2-1 lead after the first period.
Charlie Blyth scored a power play goal at the 12:23 mark of the middle stanza that put the Stars in a 3-1 whole. But Cheverie answered with 2:18 left in the second, putting a centering pass off of the skate of Missouri netminder Tim Knudsen that trickled into the net.
Knudsen made 23 saves and four shootout stops in earning the shoot out loss. Stars' goalie Greg Hewitt made 26 saves in regulation and stopped five shootout chances to push his record to 10-4-3 and his records in shoot outs to 3-3.
Columbus returns to the ice at the Ohio Expo Center Coliseum tomorrow night for their fourth meeting in as many weeks with the Fort Wayne Komets at 7 p.m.
