January 7, 2004 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Columbus Stars News Release
Jason Cannon's tip in goal at the 10:47 mark of third period broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the Quad City Mallards to a 2-1 win over the Columbus Stars at the Ohio Expo Center Coliseum.
Cannon tipped in a pass from Jon Francisco on the game winning goal. The Mallards tied the game at one on a goal by Patrick Nadeau at 6:32 of the third assisted by Jason Sessa and Jason Goulet.
Nick Bootland opened scoring with his 21st goal of the year on a rebound of Brian Ridolfi's shot at the 4:10 mark of the third period. Bootland is the team leader in points with 38.
The first period was stopped only three times and took less than 24 minutes of actual time to complete. The Stars outshot the Mallards 8-5 in the stanza.
More of the same in the second as the Mallards forced several great saves from UHL Eastern Conference All-Star Greg Hewitt, who made nine stops for the period.
The Stars play at home twice over the weekend, as Blue Jackets UHL affiliate the Elmira Jackals come to Columbus to play Friday and Saturday nights at the Ohio Expo Center Coliseum. Columbus is one game into a nine-game homestand that covers each of the next three Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
