Fury Sign New Goaltender

MUSKEGON, MI.---Riding the crest of a current 7-game undefeated streak at 7(6-0-1) and with only a single setback through their last 11-starts 11(8-1-2), the Western Conference and United Hockey League leading Muskegon Fury have taken another measure expressly to enhance their title contending role for the 2003-04 UHL season.

Today, President / Governor Tony Lisman, in collaboration with Director of Hockey Operations / Head Coach Todd Nelson, has announced that the Fury have signed goaltender BRIAN HAALAND to a contract for the remainder of the 2003-04 UHL season. In adhering with club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

HAALAND, 23, will be tackling his first-ever experience in the professional ranks, having arrived on the first-place Muskegon hockey scene directly from the collegiate campus of the U. Nebraska-Omaha. The 6-0, 185lb native of Minot, North Dakota actually commenced the current campaign with the Mavericks before casting his lot with the league-leading Fury.

For the 2003-04 season, Haaland saw action in 6-games overall with the CCHA school, posting a record of 5(1-3-1) with a 3.07 GAA and .899 SPCT. In strictly league-conference competition, the new Muskegon goaltender fashioned a scintillating GAA of 2.35 in 3-games with a 906 SPCT and an 3(0-1-1) mark. The Fury's newest addition was actually in his fourth year with Nebraska-Omaha, having seen somewhat limited duty in his previous three seasons.

To make room for the acquisition of Haaland, the Fury have waived first-year goaltender Ryan Aschaber. Obtained from the Columbus Stars in a straight cash deal on November 4th, the first-year pro from Peterborough, Ontario played in 7-games for the Fury, recording a 5(3-1-1) mark with an .877 SPCT and 4.22 GAA.

Haaland is expected to be in uniform for the Fury 34(23-9-2)48 this weekend as the league-leaders complete an extended 4-game home stand by hosting Missouri on Friday night and nearby rival Kalamazoo Saturday night with both games on the docket for a 7:30 pm face-off at Walker Arena.
