Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
MUSKEGON, MI.--- Getting set to embark on the post-season classic, the Turner Cup Playoffs, the Huber Trophy Champions, the Muskegon Lumberjacks continue to reap some major honors and accolades from their IHL regular season supremacy and sovereignty.
On this date, the Lumberjacks, in conjunction with the International Hockey League, have announced that standout defense-man MATT KRUG has been named to the annual IHL All-Rookie Team in balloting from the league general managers, coaches and media.
KRUG, 24, joins Flint Generals goaltender Rob Nolan, Fort Wayne Komets defenseman Frankie DeAngelis, Port Huron Icehawks forward Mickael Bedard, Flint forward John Mori and Fort Wayne forward Sean O'Connor on the league's rookie team.
The Lumberjacks rookie defenseman emerged as a major crowd favorite throughout his maiden voyage pro season with his assertive physical on-ice presence and persona. The collegiate product of Detroit's Wayne State U., and later Robert Morris U., previously captured the IHL's coveted award for the league's Best Defenseman, an extraordinary attainment for a first year pro at the IHL level. On Muskegon's annual Awards Night, he laid claim to the Team Best Defenseman Award as well as the Best Check Deliverer Award.
From the Detroit suburb of Southfield, the 6-0, 215lb right-hand shooting rugged, ruffian, rock-ribbed rearguard also topped all IHL defensemen in scoring production, collecting an impressive 47-points in 75-games on 14-goals, 33-assists with 209-PIM. His 14-goals included 9 on the power play which also led the league in both of those vital departments. His 209-PIM and 42-minors led this season's freshmen class. He was circuit second in SOG among defensemen with 179 as well as finishing circuit sixth in league point-productivity among rookies. Krug also carded an excellent +16 rating for the year.
The Lumberjacks defenseman adeptly and adroitly authored two 4-points' performances, including a home opening night 1-goal, 3-assists in his team's 9-3 demolition of the Bloomington Prairie Thunder on October 17th at Walker Arena. His second 4-points' masterpiece was achieved January 3rd at Flint where he engineered 2-PPG and 2-assists in a 6-5 OTSO success over the `Jacks opening round playoff opponents, the Generals.
