Fort Wayne, IN | Thursday, April 22, 2010 --- The Komets successfully started their 50th playoff campaign and defense of back-to-back Turner Cup championships doubling up the Port Huron Icehawks 4-2 and taking game one of the IHL best-of-seven semi-finals Thursday at the War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne.
Matt Syroczynski netted the first goal of the series at 15:50 of the first period to give the Komets a 1-0 lead at the end of one period of play. Brando Naurato pulled the Icehawks even at 6:43 of the second with a power play tally. Justin Hodgman answered at 13:08 with his 15th career post-season goal with Fort Wayne to give the Komets a 2-1 lead going into the second intermission. The Komets wasted no time in the third getting on the board with Sean O'Connor finding the net at 1:53. Port Huron pulled within one again at 5:21 when Daniel Tetrault solved Komet goaltender Tim Haun. O'Connor netted his second mark of the night at 8:16 to finish the scoring for the evening and give Fort Wayne a 4-2 win and 1-0 series lead.
Haun earned the win making 25 saves while Larry Sterling suffered the loss stopping 30 of 34 Fort Wayne shots. Game two is slated for McMorran Arena in Port Huron Saturday at 7:30pm. The Komets will return home to host the Hawks in game three Sunday at 6pm.
