New Jersey Jackals News Release
Brockton, MA - On a hot and humid Tuesday evening the New Jersey Jackals found their bats to be ice cold, falling to the Brockton Rox 8-0 at Campanelli Stadium. Rox starter Craig Anderson was the story as he pitched a complete game shutout, holding New Jersey to seven hits while striking out seven. It was the second complete game win of the season for the Australian native.
The Jackals latest acquisition, starting pitcher Sean Thompson was roughed up in his first start with New Jersey, allowing five runs on nine hits in just three innings on the mound. Brockton plated a run in the second courtesy of an RBI-double by third baseman Phil Cuadrado, but really turned it on in the bottom of the third. The first four batters of the inning - center fielder Chris Valencia, first baseman Clyde Williams, left fielder Palmer Karr and designated hitter Jud Thigpen - all recorded hits. After Valencia doubled, Williams singled him home for the second run of the game. Moments later, Karr blasted a two-run home run - his 16th of the season - over the left field wall. Thigpen would follow with a double and score when second baseman Melvin Falu deposited an RBI-single of his own to make it 5-0.
Thompson (0-1) was lifted after the third inning for left-hander Mark Suchowiecki who came on in relief. The Rox would score their final three runs of the contest off the Jackals reliever in the bottom of the fourth. After Williams led off with a single and Karr struck out swinging, Thigpen walked to put runners at first and second. Suchowiecki got right fielder Keith Brachold swinging for the second out of the inning, before surrendering an RBI-double to Falu. Cuadrado would then promptly lace a single to score both Thigpen and Falu to finalize the scoring for the Rox. Jackal's rookie left-hander Mike Lorentson would pitch scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth innings.
This marked the first time since July 26th that the Jackals had been shutout in a loss, the last one a 10-0 defeat at the hands of Quebec. Shortstop Mike DeJesus and catcher Matt Lauderdale were the only New Jersey batters to record multi-hit games, each registering a pair of singles.
New Jersey and Brockton will conclude their four-game series tomorrow night when the Jackals send left-hander Giuseppe Granitto to the mound to face Rox right-hander Jeff Long. Joey Whelan will have the live call of the game at www.jackals.com. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with the pre game show starting 10 minutes prior.
