Anderson Crushes Jackals in Rox Win

BROCKTON, MA - (August 5, 2009) - Brockton Rox pitcher LHP Craig Anderson sparkled on Wednesday night at Campanelli Stadium, tossing a complete game shutout over the first place New Jersey Jackals in an 8-0 win for the Rox. The Rox offense was led by 3B Phillip Cuadrado who drove in four runs with three hits.

Anderson tossed his second complete game of the season, baffling the Jackals and growing stronger as the game wore on. He recorded seven strikeouts, five of which came after the fifth inning and he very nearly struck out the last four batters of the game. He retired 13 of 14 to reach two outs in the ninth inning with three of the last four outs coming by way of the strikeout. He allowed only one runner to reach beyond second base.

Meanwhile, the Rox offense opened up early against New Jersey starter LHP Sean Thompson. Cuadrado drove in his first of four RBI on the night with an RBI double in the second which plated RF Keith Brachold.

In the third inning, CF Chris Valencia stretched a leadoff hit into a double to start the inning and Thompson never recovered. 1B Clyde Williams followed with an RBI single, and then LF Palmer Karr added a two-run home run to push the Rox lead to 4-0. The fourth consecutive hit to start the inning came as a double off the bat of DH Jud Thigpen and he scored three batters later on another RBI single by Cuadrado.

An inning later, Brockton added three more runs on an RBI single by 2B Melvin Falu and two-run single by Cuadrado. In total, the Rox scored eight runs on 15 hits. Seven of the nine starters had at least one hit, and five of those had at least two hits.

The Rox will attempt to win the four-game series in the finale on Thursday night at Campanelli Stadium after two consecutive wins. RHP Jeff Long (3-3, 3.66 ERA) will take the hill opposite New Jersey's LHP Giuseppe Granitto (0-3, 5.36 ERA). Thursday night's first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
