New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - Joe Persichina's two-out RBI triple in the top of the 12th inning vaulted the Sussex Skyhawks past the New Jersey Jackals 5-4 for their second straight extra-inning win.
With two outs in the 12th, Jackals reliever Edgar Estanga walked catcher Ryan Boelsen before Persichina ripped his second triple of the season down the right field line and into the Sussex bullpen to plate the game-winning run.
In what began as a pitchers' duel, the Skyhawks plated the first run of the game in the top of the sixth when center fielder Carl Loadenthal deposited a one-out double down the left field line against starter Nick Asselin and stole third before scoring on a sacrifice fly off the bat of designated hitter Caleb Stewart.
The Jackals, who managed just one hit over the first five frames against Sussex starter Mike McGuire, strung together four consecutive one-out singles to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth. RBI singles by left fielder Jacob Butler and designated hitter Shawn Riggans plated second baseman Abraham Nunez and catcher Jordan Newton.
In the top of the seventh, a two-run triple by center fielder Carl Loadenthal with two outs helped Sussex regain a 3-2 lead and chased Asselin from the contest. The next batter, Stewart, doubled to left to increase the Skyhawks' advantage to 4-2.
A bases-loaded walk by catcher Jordan Newton in the bottom of the seventh plated center fielder Jeff Grose, whose single sparked a two-out rally, to pull the Jackals within one. Then in the bottom of the eighth, first baseman Jabe Bergeron lifted a game-tying solo homer to left field to send the game into extra innings deadlocked at four.
Neither Asselin nor McGuire, who carried a scoreless contest into the sixth inning, factored in the decision. Asselin allowed four runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings with three walks and three strikeouts while McGuire yielded three runs on seven hits with five walks and five strikeouts over 6 2/3. Estanga (0-2) surrendered the go-ahead run in the 12th to take the loss while Jared Locke (3-1) tossed three scoreless frames to earn the win. Tim Stringer, who was the Skyhawks' starting pitcher in game two of Tuesday's doubleheader, allowed a one-out walk in the bottom of the 12th before inducing a game-ending double play off the bat of Bergeron to notch his first career save. For the Jackals, Edward Rodriguez and Romas Hicks contributed 2 1/3 shutout innings out of the bullpen.
Butler led the offensive charge for New Jersey with a 3-for-6 night at the plate as the Jackals and Skyhawks each banged out 10 hits. For Sussex, Stewart, the Can-Am League RBI leader, drove in two runs went 1-for-4 with a seventh-inning double to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.
With 13 games remaining in the first half, the Jackals (14-19) trail the first-place Quebec Capitales by 9 ½ games. The Skyhawks (18-15) sit five games back in third place after taking three of five games against New Jersey this week.
The Jackals travel to Massachusetts on Saturday to begin a four-game series with the Pittsfield Colonials at 6:05 p.m. at Wahconah Park. New Jersey will send southpaw Ryan Lobban (2-1, 4.93) to the mound against right-hander Patrick Moran (0-0, 5.68). Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
