Jackals Down 5-0 In First, Roar Back To 12-7 Win Over Bears

After Kyle Greenwalt allowed five runs in the top of the first inning, the odds appeared to be anywhere but the in the Jackals favor, but on a picturesque summer Sunday in Little Falls, the Jackals with responded with 10 unanswered runs, ultimately holding on for a 12-7 victory.

Angel Berroa and Carlos Guzman both hit home runs for the New Jersey, but perhaps the biggest hit of the day was a go-ahead RBI single off the bat of second baseman Gaetano Giunta in the bottom of the fifth inning. That hit came after catcher Chris Henderson smacked an RBI double down the left field line to tie the game up at five.

Outfielder Francisco Caraballo continued his red-hot hitting, going three for five on the day with three RBIs. Carlos Guzman went two for four on the day with three RBIs and the aforementioned home run.

The Jackals did not commit an error in the game. They're 11-4 when error-free this season. The Jackals defense has not committed more than one error game in 21 of their last 22 games.

The comeback also gave Jackals' starter Kyle Greenwalt his first win since June 9th. He's now 3-1 on the year. After a rocky first inning that saw him throw 36 pitches, Greenwalt went five innings allowing only those five first-inning runs on seven hits. He struck out five.

Bears' rookie right-hander Caleb Cuevas was pulled after two-plus innings pitched. He allowed four runs on four hits while striking out three. He remains 0-4 this season.

Mike Petrowski came on in relief of Cuevas. He allowed three runs on six hits and suffers a loss in his first decision of the season.

Leading the way for Newark was Tucker Nathans. He went three for four with two RBIs.

With the win, the Jackals even the current series at one while taking a 5-3 season lead in the Essex County Executive's Cup series. The winner of the regular season series between the Can-Am rivals, who are separated geographically by only 12 miles, is awarded the Essex County Executive Cup at season's end. Last year, the Jackals won the season series 9-3.

The Jackals are now 6.5 games back of the Quebec Capitales. They are 27-21 overrall as well as 705-605 in franchise history.

The win was the Jackals' first weekend victory since June 3rd.

The Bears drop to 14-28 and remain in last place in the Can-Am League.

The two teams will have an off-day tomorrow before playing game three of this series on Tuesday at Yogi Berra Stadium. Right-hander Steve Fox (7-1, 2.57) starts for the Jackals and looks to extend his Can-Am League lead in wins to eight. The Bears send Pedro Rivera (1-6, 5.62) to the hill in the rubber game. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
