Worcester Tornadoes News Release
The Worcester Tornadoes won the first game of their series against the El Paso Diablos by rallying from two deficits on Saturday night at Cohen Stadium.
Jerod Edmondson had a pair of game-tying home runs, and the Worcester squad ended the night with four round-trippers.
The Tornadoes jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half inning thanks to a Johnny Welch two-run homer and an RBI double by Nick Salotti. In the bottom of the first, a Wellington Dotel RBI triple got the Diablos on the board, scoring Mitch Einertson.
El Paso grabbed a 6-3 lead from a handful of second-inning runs, starting with an RBI double for J.J. Muse. Reid Fronk had an RBI double of his own, as a Tornadoes opponent scored five runs or more in an inning for the fifth time in the last seven games.
Worcester tied the game with a three-run rally in the fourth, as the first three hitters all mashed extra base hits. Tony Patane doubled, Cameron Monger doubled him home, and Edmondson hit the first of his two homers.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Diablos retaliated with a pair of runs to take an 8-6 lead. Einertson had a sacrifice fly, and Dotel stole home as part of a double steal to widen the gap.
Just half an inning later though, Edmondson went yard again. Jerod knocked Cam in for the second frame in a row to tie the game at eight runs apiece.
The visitors took their second lead of the contest in the eighth, as Brandon Pinckney scored on a wild pitch. In the ninth, the Tornadoes added what turned out to be much needed insurance. Chris Torres pinch hit and hit a solo homer to start the game's last inning, and Monger scored for the third time (tied for a game-high with Edmondson) on a Pinckney single.
In the bottom of the ninth, Daniel Nelson hit a two-run homer to bring the Diablos within a run, but Nick Serino held on for the save by striking out the next two batters.
Matt McDonald earned the victory in relief for Worcester, tossing two scoreless innings. He allowed one hit, and struck out two El Paso batters.
Drew Graham got the loss for the home team, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk, while striking out one hitter.
Phil Negus got a no-decision for the Tornadoes, allowing eight runs (but only three earned due to five Worcester errors). He K'd nine batters, walked three, and gave up eight hits.
Ronny Morla pitched just three innings in his start for El Paso, allowing six runs on eight hits.
Sunday's game (the second of the series) is at 8:05pm EST, with Zach Zuercher getting the nod for the Tornadoes.
