New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ – New Haven kept it close early, but the Jackals offense exploded late, while blowing out the Cutters 11-4. The win mathematically eliminated New Haven from the playoff race.

In the top of the first, New Jersey would quickly put a couple of runs on the board, against New Haven starter Buddy Bengel. RBI singles by Wilton Veras and Darren Ciraco made it 2-0, New Jersey.

Jimmy Hurst made it a one run Jackals' lead in the bottom of the first, with his 16th homerun of the season, a solo bomb.

Ciraco notched his second RBI of the game in the top of the third, with a two out triple.

New Jersey would extend their lead even further in the fifth. A two-run homerun by Chris Rowan, his 21st of the season, made it 5-1 in favor of the Jackals.

The Cutters once again cut the New Jersey lead in the bottom of the fifth. Adam Shorsher scored on a wild pitch by Jackals' starter Joel Bennett, and Jeff Brooks doubled, pushing across the second run. Through five, New Jersey led 5-3.

The Jackals would blow open the game in the top of the seventh. Wady Almonte doubled in a run. The following batter Chris Rowan belted his second homerun of the game. The three-run bomb made the Jackals' lead 9-3.

They would add two more runs to the Cutters' misery in the top of the eighth. John Anderson scored on an error, and Almonte doubled home Veras, making it 11-3.

Brooks notched an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth, but it was too little, too late, for the Cutters.

New Jersey starter Joel Bennett went six innings, while giving up three earned runs on six hits. He walked three batters, and struck out six. He picked up the victory.

Buddy Bengel lasted only five innings for the Cutters. He gave up five earned runs, on ten hits, while walking one, and striking out three. He suffered the loss.

The game scheduled between the New Jersey Jackals and the Elmira Pioneers on Wednesday, August 4, 2004, was suspended due to rain, entering the bottom of the third inning.
