New Haven County Cutters News Release
(West Haven, CT- August 24, 2004) The New Haven County Cutters were lit up for 18 hits and were eliminated from playoff contention with an 11-4 loss to the New Jersey Jackals.
After the Jackals jumped out to a 2-0 lead, Jimmy Hurst led off the home half of the second inning with his second homer in as many games to cut the lead in half. That would be the closest New Haven got. Hurst has a team-high 16 home runs on the season.
Starter Buddy Bengel allowed five runs on 10 hits in his first professional start in five innings of work.
Jeff Brooks went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and a double.
Kevin Forbes added a pair of singles in a 2-for-4 night.
Slugging New Jersey shortstop Chris Rowan went 4-for-5 with a pair of homers, 5 RBI and was a triple shy of the cycle. Rowan leads the Northeast League with 22 homers on the season.
Former Cutter Darren Ciraco went 3-for-5 with 2 RBI and threw out Jeff Brooks from centerfield in the fifth inning to keep the Cutters from drawing to within one run of the lead.
The 4-5-6 spots in the lineup for New Jersey combined to go 9-for-15 with 9 RBI.
Wednesday at Yale Field is United Way/ News Channel 8 Summer Camp Day and Whattaya Know Wednesday Kids Trivia. Camps from the around the New Haven area will gather to root on the Cutters and test their knowledge. Winners of the trivia contest will have their names posted on the New Haven website, www.cuttersbaseball.com. The series will conclude tomorrow night at 7:05 PM.
